Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie (MPIA), Heidelberg, Germany
Observational Research Staff Position (tenure-track): Galaxies, Galaxy Evolution and
Cosmology (Reference number 08-10)
The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg is seeking an ambitious, highly
qualified astrophysicist to fill a tenure-track position within the “Galaxies and Cosmology”
department in the field of observational astronomy and astrophysics.
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out an independent program of research.
We are particularly seeking candidates with expertise and interest in the areas of nearby
galaxies including the Local Group, galaxy surveys, galaxy formation and evolution, or
observational cosmology, although outstanding candidates in other areas will also be
considered.
The MPIA provides a rich environment for collaboration on galaxies and cosmology, planet
and star formation, theoretical astrophysics, and instrument development. MPIA researchers
have privileged access to the twin 8.4 meter Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, the 2.2 m
MPG telescope on La Silla, the 2.2 and 3.5 m telescopes on Calar Alto, and access to all
other ESO facilities and the Very Large Telescope (+Interferometer) in Chile. Through MPG
arrangements, MPIA astronomers have privileged opportunity to use (sub-)millimeter
observatories such as IRAM and APEX. In addition to its participation in the SDSS, the MPIA
is a major partner in the Pan-STARRS1. MPIA researchers profit from close cooperation with
the Center for Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg; in particular, staff members at the
MPIA have the opportunity to teach and tutor classes at a variety of levels (also in English).
For more information on MPIA research please see www.mpia.de.
Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field.
Remuneration will follow the guidelines set for staff members by the Max Planck Society. The
appointment will be for an initial period of five years, with tenuring based on a successful
performance review. The position includes funding for one PhD student position and support
for publications, travel, etc. We anticipate a starting date in mid-2009.
Interested candidates should send application materials, including curriculum vitae and a
brief statement of research interests to the address below by December 1, 2008. They
should also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent directly to that address
by the same date. Electronic format is acceptable. For further questions, please contact
Hans-Walter Rix (rix@mpia.de).
