FHSAA ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

1. Students entering the ninth grade for the first time must be regularly promoted from the eighth grade to be eligible
during the fall semester. Regularly promoted means promoted in accordance with the public school district’s or private
school’s pupil progression plan. It does not mean administratively placed. To be eligible during the spring semester and
each semester thereafter, incoming ninth grades must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher in
the core courses identified in s.232.246 (1).
2. To be eligible to participate in interscholastic extracurricular student activities, a student entering the 9 th grade after
July 1, 1997, and thereafter must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale, or its
equivalent, in the courses required by s.232.246 (1). In order to be eligible under this section, students who entered the
9th grade prior to the 1997-98 school year must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above. (Section
232.425, Florida Statutes). A period of seven (7) calendar days beyond the last day of the system marking period is
provided to determine academic eligibility during the current semester.
3. Cumulative grade point average means the grade point average for all semesters in high school, not just for work
completed the previous semester. Therefore, it will be possible in future years for a student to earn a 3.0 grade point
average for a semester’s work, but remain ineligible for the following semester because his/her cumulative grade point
average remains below 2.0.

Athletic Eligibility
The Florida High School Activities AssociationHigh School rules and policies
govern the eligibility of all athletes. For the most current information,
please contact your coach or the athletic director. Also, the athletic
trainer is responsible for seeing that each athlete can participate with
minimal risk of injury. The athletic trainer will use the following policies as
guides:
1. No athlete will begin practice unless they have obtained a physical by
a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.). This is for the protection of the athletes as
well as for the protection of the athletic trainer and Manatee County
School Board.
2. No athlete will begin practice unless they have turned in a completed
medical history form signed by a parent or guardian.
3. No athlete will begin practice unless they have paid for the minimum
insurance policy as offered through the School Board. This will insure that
each athlete has at least minimum insurance coverage. Additional School
Board coverage is required for junior varsity football, varsity football, and
soccer.
4. No athlete will begin practice unless they have turned in a notarized
residency affidavit, which gives consent for medical treatment.
5. If a female athlete becomes pregnant, she is to be placed on the
disabled list until a physical determines her level of activity. If pregnancy is
suspected, the athlete will be referred to a physician for an examination.
A written recommendation will be returned to the school and kept in the
athlete’s file. The purpose of this policy is to protect the mother as well as
the fetus. It is not the intention of this policy to remove the athlete from her
team because of pregnancy.
