Moorpark Unified School District Mesa Verde Middle School Honors Program Placement Criteria Effective Spring 2007 Program Objective: To serve the needs of academically gifted and talented (GATE) students and other high achieving students through advanced learning opportunities providing a qualitatively differentiated curriculum, acceleration, depth and complexity in mathematics , science, language arts and history honors classes in grades 6, 7 and 8. Honors student placement: Students may qualify for one more honors classes at grades 6, 7 and 8 under the following criteria Students entering Grade 6 Mathematics Honors Criteria Placement is determined by student’s performance on the following: End-of-Year Math Assessment from Algebra Readiness Test California Standards Test on spring STAR test 5th grade Language Arts Honors Criteria Placement is determined by student’s performance on the following: End-of-Year Writing Assessment California Standards Test on spring STAR test 5th grade reading report card grade Science Honors Criteria History Honors Criteria Students are placed in Science Honors using the placement criteria for Math Honors supported by previous classroom performance. Grade 7 Students are placed in History Honors using the placement criteria for Language Arts Honors supported by previous classroom performance. History Honors Criteria Students are placed in History Honors using the placement criteria for Language Arts Honors supported by previous classroom performance. Parents, students and staff may appeal student placement decisions at all grade levels by contacting school site administrators. 6th grade honors math students will have the opportunity to test for the 7th grade Algebra class, which will prepare them for the 8th grade Geometry class (Mesa Verde). Placement in the 7th grade Algebra class will be made based on Algebra readiness scores of 45/50 or higher, CST math scores of 430 or higher, and previous classroom performance. Students selected for the 7th grade algebra class will be notified in June. All other honors placement takes place in August after the most recent CST scores become available.
