GATE Program Placement Criteria
Effective Spring 2007
Program Objective: To serve the needs of academically gifted and talented (GATE) students through advanced learning opportunities providing a qualitatively differentiated curriculum,
acceleration, depth and complexity in mathematics, science, language arts and history honors classes in grades 6, 7 and 8.
GATE student placement: GATE students will be placed in all four honors classes as incoming 6th graders. GATE students will be placed in at least two honors classes at 7th and 8th grade
even if they do not qualify under the criteria listed below.

Science Honors Criteria
Students are placed in Science Honors using the placement criteria for
Math Honors supported by previous classroom performance.
History Honors Criteria
Students are placed in History Honors using the placement criteria for
Language Arts Honors supported by previous classroom performance.
Algebra CP Criteria *
Grade 8
Minimum: placement in two
honors classes if honors criteria
not met.

Science Honors Criteria
Students are placed in Science Honors using the placement criteria for
Math Honors supported by previous classroom performance.
History Honors Criteria
Students are placed in History Honors using the placement criteria for
Language Arts Honors supported by previous classroom performance.
Parents, students and staff may appeal student placement decisions at all grade levels by contacting school site administrators.
6th grade honors math students will have the opportunity to test for the 7th grade Algebra class, which will prepare them for the 8 th grade Geometry class(Mesa Verde).
This test will be given in the spring of the 6th grade school-year.
