Section 2.4.8, Page 1 UTHSCSA School of Nursing Faculty Handbook Chapter 2: Administrative Policies and Guidelines Section 2.4 Job Descriptions 2.4.8 Director of Clinical Skills Effective: Sept 2012 Revised: Sept 2012 Responsibility: Dean Pages 1 - 2 DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL LEARNING LABORATORY AND SIMULATION CENTER The Director of Clinical Learning Laboratory and Simulation Center is responsible for management of Clinical Learning Laboratory and Simulation Center: supervision of personnel, budget, and overseeing inventory of equipment and supplies, scheduling, and working with faculty and others using the Center to develop appropriate approaches to clinical learning in a simulated environment. The Director who remains technically up to date and involved with the local clinical settings acts as a leader and resource person to the Curriculum Committees, Learning Lab/Sim Center staff, School of Nursing faculty, faculty from other schools at the HSC who may wish to use Sim Center services, and community partners. The Director will coordinate with faculty and administration. Teaching is also a role component. The Director reports to the Dean for the School of Nursing. Requirements Minimum Master’s Degree in Nursing is required. Teaching experience in nursing, management and outstanding interpersonal skills are essential. Skills lab teaching experience and administration preferred. General Responsibilities Collaborates with faculty and others to plan appropriate learning activities using resources of the Simulation Center. Oversees preparation and maintenance of the Simulation center for all learning experiences. Prepares budgets and orders and inventories supplies and equipment. Assesses need for instructional materials and assists faculty with preparation of teaching/learning materials. Assesses need for new supplies and equipment and requests samples for review and evaluation. Participates in media production by demonstrating techniques. Sets up clinical testing as necessary. Facilitates evaluation of Clinical Learning laboratory and Simulation Center to access effectiveness of teaching learning strategies. Position Characteristics 1. Provide leadership in relation to the Clinical Learning Laboratory and Simulation Center. 2. Demonstrates a commitment to the creation and maintenance of an effective teaching – learning environment. 3. Articulates the issues relative to teaching clinical competence in a simulated environment to appropriate persons/groups. 4. Recommends hiring of qualified staff to teach and implement lab operations in the lab to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing. 5. Delegates teaching/lab management responsibilities appropriately. Is a resource to faculty, department chairs, others seeking information on utilization, availability & costs of supplies/models/lab experiences. 6. Fosters and maintains an excellent teaching learning environment. 7. Supervises learning lab/ simulation center staff regarding: Weekly lab planning meetings. Preparations for lab sessions. Supervision to new staff. Management of student learning problems. Effective teaching. Collaborates with faculty and learning lab staff to insure competency education is current and consistent with the required essentials of practice for the level of student and to identify and develop best practice teaching – learning strategies.. Maintains the learning environment – managing resources necessary to assure the most effective environment. Assumes responsibility for implementation of teaching learning, and evaluation of activities in the learning laboratory/simulation center. Manages resources effectively. Allocates budget to ensure adequate/appropriate staff. Manages budget to ensure sufficient/appropriate supplies/models. Assumes responsibility for lab equipment, models, space. Maintains an “on-call” process to provide staff when absences occur. Maintains adequate supplies for student check-out. Assess quality/adequacy of media and other teaching – learning resources. Communicates effectively. Keeps course liaison, department chairs, teaching staff, others informed. Maintain communication with students. Communicates resource needs to appropriate persons. Represents Clinical Learning Laboratory and Simulation Center within the School of Nursing, Health Science Center & community at large. Coordinates, plans and/or implements labs for groups external to the School of Nursing. Conducts tours/presentations for Health Science Center visitors. Consults with faculty from other schools regarding learning. Collaborates with faculty and staff to assure congruence between learning laboratory/simulation center teaching- learning and course objectives. Manages and maintains inventory of Equipment and supplies Personnel Hires, supervises, and evaluates learning laboratory/simulation center personnel who teach and/or manage lab operations. Hires, supervises, and evaluates staff and student assistants. Manages and maintains personnel records in accordance with UTHSCSA Handbook of Operating Procedures. . Teaching Oversees and/or participates in laboratory skills sessions. Provides special sessions for students who wish extra practice. Collaborates with faculty regarding best evidence based practices for teaching – learning in technology enhanced or simulated environments. Provides development opportunities for learning laboratory/ simulation center staff. Assesses effectiveness of teaching – learning in the learning laboratory/ simulation center environment. Appointment 75% Administrative and Professional Appointment 25% Faculty Position at the rank of Instructor/Clinical or Assistant Professor/Clinical 12 Month Contract
