INFORMATION

History of the Jim Anderson Scholarships

Jim Anderson, the former Member for Londonderry in the NSW State Parliament and a former mayor of Blacktown City Council, passed away suddenly on 22 March 2003.

Mr Anderson worked tirelessly for public education and he was deeply committed to improving the future for young people in Western Sydney.

In April 2003 the former Premier of NSW, Mr Bob Carr MP, announced the establishment of the Jim Anderson Scholarships to honour Mr Anderson's memory by providing financial support for up to five students who are currently enrolled in a number of government high schools in Western Sydney.

The 2008 Scholarship Program

At the end of 2007, five scholarships will be awarded to students who will be undertaking formal full-time study at either the University of Western Sydney (UWS) or at a TAFE NSW college or campus in 2008. Scholarships will be awarded to students based on evidence of their performance against a set of criteria outlined in the Application Form.

Successful students will receive $5 000 in two payments of $2 500 each.

Guidelines

To be eligible for a Jim Anderson Scholarship you must be completing the Higher

School Certificate in 2007 at one of the government high schools or campuses listed below and you must intend to undertake full time study at either UWS or at a TAFE

NSW college or campus in 2008.

Cambridge Park High School

Colyton High School

Chifley College Bidwill Campus

Chifley College Senior Campus

Doonside High School

Evans High School

Mitchell High School

Plumpton High School

Richmond High School

Rooty Hill High School

St Marys Senior High School

The Hills Sports High School

Wyndham College

One of the scholarships is designated for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student.

Please note : Students who are applying for a Jim Anderson Scholarship , must lodge separate applications for enrolment in a course or courses offered at TAFE

NSW and/or for enrolment at UWS and must meet the appropriate closing dates.

To be the recipient of a 2008 Jim Anderson Scholarship , you must be offered and you must accept enrolment in a full-time course at TAFE NSW or at UWS in 2008.

What does the Jim Anderson Scholarship provide?

The Jim Anderson Scholarship provides successful students with the sum of $5 000 to assist in meeting the cost of full-time tertiary study. The first payment of $2 500 will be made at the beginning of the first year of full-time study.

Provided that normal academic progression requirements have been met, the second payment of $2 500 will be made:

at the beginning of the second year of full-time study or

in the case of Jim Anderson Scholars studying a one year course at a TAFE

NSW college or campus, at the beginning of the second semester of full-time study.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide proof of enrolment in a full-time course that meets the guidelines for the award as noted above.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the award of a Jim Anderson Scholarship you must:

be completing your Higher School Certificate in 2007

be enrolled at one of the NSW government schools or campuses listed above

gain a position in a full-time course in 2008 either at the University of Western

Sydney OR at a TAFE NSW college or campus and provide proof of enrolment.

Applying for the scholarship

If you wish to apply for the award of a Jim Anderson Scholarship , you must complete the Application Form. It is strongly suggested that you use a computer to complete your application, using the format and questions in the Application Form.

Scholarships . The application form will be posted on the website in July 2007.

You are asked to attach some supporting documentation. Be careful to attach only photocopies of documents that are requested or that closely support your application. You must ask your year adviser, deputy principal or principal to certify photocopies of any documents as genuine copies. (Principals, deputy principals or year advisers are asked to certify photocopies as genuine copies of originals, by writing ‘original sighted’, printing their name, then signing and dating the copies). Do not send original documents.

Referees

You are required to include comments from two referees with your application. Your first referee could be your year adviser, a teacher or a member of the community.

Your second referee must be your school principal .

Your principal will write his or her reference after you have completed pages 6 – 10 of the application, and your first referee has completed his or her statement on page

11.

Selecting the Jim Anderson Scholars

A selection panel will review all scholarship applications according to the criteria set out in the Application Form.

The selection panel will include representatives of the NSW Department of Education and Training and TAFE NSW, a representative of the University of Western Sydney and other independent experts if and as required.

After considering all written applications, the selection panel may draw up a short list of applicants for interview and will make recommendations to the NSW Minister for

Education and Training on the recipients of the scholarships.

Submitting your application

The application must be signed by your principal. Before you give it to your principal, you should make a photocopy of your application for your personal files. Your principal will be required to write his or her statement, then rank and sign your application after you have completed and copied it.

Your principal will submit your application to the selection panel.
