Education Master's degree in counseling required. Skills Expert knowledge of counseling, management and leadership skills; ability to work with individuals, small groups and classroom groups; ability to analyze student assessment, perception and school process data, and develop effective action plans; knowledge of effective strategies to encourage students to successfully complete high school. Work Experience Three years of successful school counseling experience required. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY Coordinating the school-wide advisement program; counseling in academics, career, and personal concerns in order to promote school completion; coordinating guidance related programs and activities related to school completion; consulting with appropriate adults; does not include a traditionally assigned student case load. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 1. Knowledge of programs a. Demonstrate a command of advisement and counseling materials and programs. 2. Advisement of program coordinator a. Manage, direct, evaluate, and publicize a comprehensive school-wide student advisement program for all students. b. Chair Local School Advisement Program Steering Committee that would oversee: 1. Identification of individual student needs per student achievement data, student interview data, demographic data, and school process data. 2. Creation and dissemination of lesson plans. 3. Continuous program improvement. c. Minimum advisement program requirements would include: 1. Provide regularly scheduled time for the delivery of the advisement program curriculum and the development of an appropriate relationship with a significant adult. 2. Students will be assigned to the same advisor for their entire high school experience. 3. Monitoring of student's academic plan and performance. 4. Frequent communication with parents regarding academic plan and performance. 5. Advisors actively participate in the graduation ceremony. d. Coordinate advisement activities with advisement program contacts at feeder middle school. 3. Drop-out prevention counseling a. Identify students at-risk of dropping out per student achievement data, perception data, demographic data, and process data. b. Provide research-based effective interventions, continuously assess effectiveness and monitor student performance. c. Meet with individual students and their parents/guardians prior to a student dropping out to discuss consequences of choices and alternatives. An advisement document would be signed by all participants at this time. d. Assure correct coding in SASI and follow up if the student withdraws and later requests a records transfer to another school. e. Conduct individual and group counseling with at-risk students in areas of educational, career, or personal need. f. Assist in implementing the school-based written guidance plan. 4. Professional growth a. Engage in professional learning and growth activities provided by the Georgia Department of Education, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and the local school. b. Apply new knowledge and skills acquired in planning, facilitating and implementing an effective advisement and developmental guidance program. 5. Professional Responsibilities a. Model correct use of oral and written language. b. Demonstrate accurate and up-to-date knowledge of advisement and counseling content. c. Interact in a professional manner with students, parents and staff. d. Work cooperatively with school administrators, other support personnel, teachers, parents, and students. e. Facilitate home-school-community communication by such means as holding conferences, telephoning and sending written communications. f. Maintain confidentiality of students and student records. g. Intervene during crisis situations. h. Demonstrate punctuality, maintain regular attendance and make necessary arrangements for absences. i. Conduct guidance, counseling and advisement activities at the times scheduled. j. Maintain accurate, complete and appropriate records and file reports promptly. k. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities. 6. Interpersonal Skills a. Display belief in the capacity of all students to be successful. b.
