Audience: Individuals needing to demonstrate this competency are staff members, volunteers, donors, board members, and representatives of partner organizations Please note: proficiency levels, specific competencies, and time frames will depend on requirements of job position or role. Minimal Proficiency Level (by 3 mos., end of 90 day probationary period for new staff) Lists key points in Heifer’s history from founding to present States Heifer’s mission Lists and describes each of the 12 Cornerstones Defines “sustainable development” Provides foundational statistics related to world hunger and poverty Describes our Values-based Planning Model Lists and briefly describes Heifer initiatives, such as Agroecology, Gender Equity, Community Development, Campaign for the Future Lists and describes Heifer’s five program areas Identifies countries with Heifer projects Matches countries and appropriate livestock List 7ms of livestock use. Mid Proficiency Level (by 12 mos.?) Accurately answers frequently asked questions from the public. Describes the process and criteria of communities applying for gifts of livestock Provides examples of community groups in particular countries that benefit from gifts of livestock. Describes each component of the Valuesbased Planning model and provides examples of its use in various settings. Describes how projects are monitored and evaluated. Describes the issues of Agroecology, Gender Equity, Youth at Risk, HIV/AIDS, Animal Well-being practices, challenges, and Heifer’s response. Identifies key Heifer staff to help in fundraising situations. States their own team’s values from memory and gives examples of indicators Provides examples of how they are incorporating our Cornerstones into their High Proficiency Level (by 2 years???) Accurately represents Heifer at government, NGO, corporate functions and/or speaking engagements. Writes articles about Heifer projects for publication. Leads group discussion on global issues, such as world hunger, poverty, agriculture. Accurately describes all Heifer organizational units, partners, and alliances. Mentors and coaches other Heifer staff and volunteers. Develops educational materials based on deep understanding of global issues and Heifer’s role. Applies the Values-based Planning Model in day to day work. Describes Focus Areas of Heifer’s Strategic Plan, strategic approaches for each focus area, and provides examples. Actively researches, studies, and applies increasing Heifer knowledge in work tasks. Cornerstones into work life. Works across Heifer community to increase quality of work. Compares current departmental practices, accomplishments, and strategies with Heifer’s Strategic Plan and makes recommendations for further alignment if needed. Actively uses and shares external resources to understand Heifer’s position in the Big Picture of International Development. Through participation in a Study Tour or visits to the field, is able to provide first hand examples of Heifer’s mission, values, and principles in action.
