All students must take and pass the VCLA during their first
semester in the program. Register for the test online

Once admitted to candidacy, a student must be continuously enrolled for at
least 1 credit per semester during the fall and spring. If a student does not enroll
for 1 credit each semester, s/he will be in violation of the Graduate School’s rule
and may have to re-take credits toward the degree and may be removed from the
program.
All students must take and pass the math portion of PRAXIS I
during their first semester in the program and must pass it before

www.ets.org/praxis. Students may be exempt from PRAXIS I
degree. If a student does not complete the degree within 6 years, s/he will need

ARTE 501 is a pre-requisite for ARTE 502.

When selecting electives, students need to ensure that at least
50% of the required 36 credits for the master’s degree are at or
above the 600 level.

Classes that are accepted for comps are regular ARTE classes at
or above the 600 level. Independent study or thesis courses do not
count for this requirement. Any request for an exception must be
submitted in writing to the head of the Graduate Programs
Committee.

A thesis takes at LEAST 2 semesters to complete and faculty
members are available for advising theses in the fall and spring
semesters.

Students must take PRAXIS II during their third semester and
have passing scores before applying to student teach. Students
must also pass their thesis or comps before enrolling in their
student teaching semester.
Depending upon a student’s financial aid status, s/he may choose
to take either TEDU 485 (6 credits - undergraduate) and TEDU 486
(6 credits - undergraduate) OR TEDU 672 (graduate) as a full time
student. If you are not a full time graduate student, it may make
your undergraduate and graduate student loans come due. The Art
Education faculty cannot give you financial advice on which option
to select. This is something that you should discuss with the
