Undergraduate/graduate workshops are part of our existing faculty load periodically, therefore, there will be no difficulty accommodating this already existing class with our existing staff. Please discuss number of sections of current offerings, dropping of course, etc. Undergraduate students would be able to take a course in our workshop series for counseling specialties for up to 4 s.h. We currently offer six workshop courses a year (CE 595/495) on various counselor training topics. When this proposal is approved, there will be no effect on current CE course offerings. What effect would approval of this course/program have on the department supplies? Include data to support expenditures for staffing, equipment, supplies, instructional resources, etc. There would be no effect on department supplies or resources. Proposal For Revised Courses A. There are no changes proposed for course description. Below is the information for the current offering of CE 495. 1. Catalog Description CE 495 Workshop: Counseling Specialties The topics of these workshops vary. Announcements of the topics and any special enrollment issues are made in advance of the workshop offering. Current Course Requirements: Undergraduate Credit: Students seeking undergraduate credit must prepare and submit a paper that synthesizes the workshop content. The paper must also include the student’s own personal reaction/critique of the workshop. All papers are to be four to eight pages in length and must be typed using a double space format. NOTE: a simple summary/outline of workshop notes will not be sufficient for this assignment. 2. Course Outline of the Major Topics and Subtopics Each workshop has its own major topics and subtopics that are relevant to current counseling and human services fields of work. Some example of the topics that have been offered in the last three years are: child therapy, personality typing (MBTI), selfmutilation, wellness, addictions, developing resiliency in children and adolescents, multicultural workshops offering information on a variety of cultures, working with step families, music therapy, Gestalt therapy, school and workplace bullying, grief and loss in childhood, dream work, grant writing, child abuse, court decorum, diversity issues in southern Minnesota, life coaching, addictive process, etc. 3. Instructional methods utilized Lecture, experiential work, small and large group work, web-based communication 4. Course Requirements Grade Option Information Sheet PASS/NO CREDIT: Students may register for Pass/No Credit (P/NC). Pass is based on attendance and participation only. Students must be present for the entire workshop in order to receive a pass grade. This means that students cannot come late or leave early and still receive credit. ROLL WILL BE TAKEN SEVERAL TIMES THROUGHOUT THE WORKSHOP. NOTE: Check the current Winona State University undergraduate or graduate catalogue for specific information regarding the P/NC grade option. Students must specifically indicate the P/NC option at the time of registration. Otherwise they will be registered for a letter grade which requires a typed paper. LETTER GRADE: If a student enrolls in a workshop for the letter grade option (A, B, C, D, F) their grade will be based on attendance and participation as well as one of the following: Graduate Credit: Students seeking graduate credit must prepare and submit a paper that applies workshop content and processes to their professional and/or personal life. All papers are to be four to eight pages in length and must be typed using a double space format. Papers must include the following points: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) A brief (one or two paragraph) summary of the workshop What were the main points of the workshop? New information/perspectives gained as a result of the workshop Points of view that the student agrees or disagrees with Specific ideas as to how information gained from the workshop could be applied to the student’s personal and/or professional life GRADING: Grades will be assigned on the basis of (1) relevance to the assigned topic (2) organization, coherence, and overall quality of the writer’s work and 3) workshop attendance and participation. Final grades will be reported at the end of the semester. DUE DATE/RETURN OF PAPERS: Information regarding submission of papers and due dates will be provided by the workshop instructor or the workshop administrator prior to the scheduled start of the workshop. Students are requested to provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with their paper if they wish to have their paper returned to them. This will ensure prompt return of papers to students. WORKSHOP ONLY: Students may register for Workshop Only. Workshop participants will be billed at the rate of $125.00 per workshop. Students who select this registration option will not receive a grade for the workshop. Students selecting this option may earn 13 continuing education contact hours. A certificate of completion will be provided upon request. B. Rationale for each of the changes proposed The only change proposed is to increase the credits offered from .5-2.0 s.h. to .5-4.0 s.h. Increasing the semester credit maximum from 2 to 4 credits will align this course with CE 595, our graduate-level workshop course, available for .5-4 credits. Increasing the semester credits also will allow undergraduate students to enroll in any appropriate departmental workshop offerings of .5-4 credits. C. Rational for each of the changes proposed There is no impact of this course on other Departments, Programs, Majors or Minors. It is not applicable that other departments would be consulted about this proposal. D. Describe impacts of this proposal on the University Studies Program.
