University Conduct Board Philosophy
The basic philosophy of accountability (discipline) at URI is one of education. As such, it focuses
on the growth and development of individual students by encouraging self-discipline and fostering
respect for the rights and privileges of others.
The formal responsibility of accountability has been delegated to the Conduct Board. The goal of
the board is to redirect the behavior of students into acceptable patterns and protect the rights of
others in the URI community.
Peer influence, exercised through the student discipline process, can often be more effective in
redirecting the behavior patterns of students than any other method of accountability within the
institution.
The student discipline system presents an opportunity for students to communicate to fellow
students the attitudes that seem most conducive to creating a positive environment within the
academic community.
There is no substitute for fairness, objectivity and good judgment.
The success of the board is contingent upon the conviction of its members to achieve a suitable
campus environment while affording individual students maximum freedom within institutional
guidelines.
