This hike will offer you a chance to view the areas’ forests and wildlife and become familiar with some of the sights, plants, birds and great local scenery. Bring water, lunch or a snack. Deadline to sign up is Tuesday, August 26, at 5:00 PM. TRIP 2: HIKING TO CH-PAA-QNN PEAK Monday, September 7 (Departure 8:00 AM) This hike will be easy to moderate in difficulty, 7.4 miles long [round trip] and has 1,800 feet of elevation gain. The hike occurs in two phases. The first portion is an easy, 3 mile hike through forest on a good trail with 600 feet of gradual elevation gain. That section is followed by a moderately difficult scramble over rough rocks up an additional 1200 vertical feet to the summit. Participants may opt to not climb the summit but must agree to remain at a designated location below the summit for about 1.5 hours while the others climb the summit. Those intending to climb the summit should wear high quality hiking shoes that have been “broken in.” Those not climbing the summit will find light hiking shoes, trail runners, or other “athletic shoes” suitable. People wearing flip flops, sandals or other inappropriate footwear will not be allowed to go. All participants must bring an appropriate daypack with 2 liters of water, lunch, hat/cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, and light wind/rain protection. A camera is suggested. This trip is appropriate for anyone in good physical condition who feels comfortable hiking several miles over varied terrain. There will not be a Pre-Trip Meeting but all participants must arrive at the Outdoor Program Office between 7:45 and 8:00 am with their lunch and other items as noted above. Cost $30. TRIP 3: ALBERTON GORGE RAFTING TRIP on the CLARK FORK RIVER Monday, September 7 (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM) Enjoy one of Montana’s premier, fun outdoor activities - popular with tourists and locals alike: riverrafting! Located just minutes from Missoula is the Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork River: a canyon section of the Clark Fork River that makes a perfect trip on a hot summer day. Class II-III whitewater, appropriate for all paddling abilities. The best time to run this river is July & August. This stretch of the Clark Fork River has rich history and remnants of Glacial Lake Missoula. The Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork River was formed during the most recent ice age. 15,000 years ago up to 30 miles of ice impounded Glacial Lake Missoula. When the water breached the ice dam catastrophic floods followed, more than a dozen separate times, forming the spectacular rock formations seen in the Alberton Gorge and many more interesting geological features seen from the Missoula Valley to the Columbia River Gorge. Experienced guides from Campus Recreation will lead the trip. Bring your sunscreen and be ready to get wet on this beautiful stretch of whitewater on the Clark Fork. Advance sign-up and payment of fee is required with Campus Recreation Outdoor Programs located in the Student Recreation Center. Registration deadline is Tuesday, August 26, at 5:00 PM. The cost is $65 and includes lunch, transportation, guides and equipment. Minimum 15, maximum 30. 7 (Turn) TRIP 4: GLACIER NATIONAL PARK TRIP September 12, 2015 Visit the beautiful and world famous Glacier National Park, the “Crown of the Continent”, and experience the natural beauty of mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and occasional glimpses of wild animals! The trip will take you to the top of the spectacular “Going-to-the-Sun Road” that climbs right up through the mountains for breathtaking vistas. (The main portions of this National Park close in October for the winter season and do not open up again until late May, so this may be your only chance to see it until next summer). The cost is $85 (non-refundable and payable at time of sign-up) which includes transportation to Glacier Park, park-entrance fees, guides, and a guided tour on the historic red buses on the Going-to-the Sun-Road in Glacier (9 spaces are also available that delete the Red Bus tour part and substitute a hike, for lesser price of $40).
