Expectations of Family Mentors
The following are expectations of individuals that are selected as Mentors.
Pre conference
 Participate on the FSP Mentor Orientation Call (to be held December 2009)
 Participate on the FSP Scholar Orientation Call (to be held December 2009)
 Establish a relationship with Congressional or Senate members or staff at the local or state level.
 Establish a monthly call time with an assigned Family Scholars (Mentees).
 Become familiar with the seven Maternal and Child Health Leadership Competencies (MCHLC), consisting
of knowledge, skills, and experience, framing the FSP.
 Read materials shared by program staff.
 Prepare for a Hill visit for yourself and assist Mentees.
 Mentors will be responsible for their travel, accommodation expenses, and per diem associated with the
AMCHP annual conference not covered by the AMCHP travel stipend (valued at $500).
 Register for the conference before February 1 (Registration fee will be covered by AMCHP).
During conference
 Actively participate in scheduled onsite (at the conference) sessions.
 Meet with assigned Family Scholars in person during the annual conference.
 Attend all of the in-person Family-specific events at the AMCHP Annual Conference and attend the regional
meeting.
o March 6-10, 2010 AMCHP Annual Conference
o IMPORTANT: Not doing so may result in you not receiving the travel stipend.
 Attend sessions that will help you learn or develop one of more of the MCH Skills.
 Take personal leave, if required, to visit your Congressional Delegate or Senate member or staff members
in their DC office while attending the AMCHP Annual Conference.
After conference
 Assist assigned Mentees to develop an Individual Development Plan (a plan on how Mentees will complete
specific activities) based on the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Leadership Competencies that will focus
on related skills and knowledge by mid-April 2010.
 Provide guidance to Family Scholars on planning and implementing a learning project during the year based
on Scholars Individual Development Plan.
During the 12 months of the program
 Devote the time necessary to participate in the FSP activities.
 Participate in a majority of the program-sponsored groups conference calls before and after the AMCHP
Annual Conference.
o January—November 2010 Monthly Conference Call (minimum of 90 minutes/month)
 Be an active contributor throughout the program.
 Prepare for the program activities by reading materials sent in advance.
 Actively participate in distance-learning activities (conference calls, webinar presentations, readings, e-mail,
etc.) that will contribute to development of competencies.
 Check your email on a regular basis and response to AMCHP requests in a timely manner.
 Network with families, MCH professionals and Title V staff.
 Continue strengthening your relationships with that of other families and Title V in your state or territory.
 Continue the work initiated as a result of participating in this program in your state or territory.
 Regularly update your supervisor (if applicable) and Title V, MCH, or CYSHCN Director of FSP activities.

 Participate in evaluation of the activities to improve the delivery of the program.
 Engage with your assigned Mentees on a frequent basis (e.g., monthly) in addition to the group conference
calls via telephone or email communication.
 Request guidance from FSP staff as necessary.
