RE: Final Tips for Graduation Hello Everyone! I hope you are well! How many more days till graduation? Yes, I cannot believe it too! Thank you for attending rehearsal. As promised, a Tip Sheet is being sent out for your review. Please review. If you have not attended rehearsal, please talk to one of your friends and get the 411. Please review the Tip Sheet below…Twice! ;^)) Once again, felicidades, Linnette Peralta Haynes SWGSA President TIP SHEET FOR 2007 GRADUATES School of Social Work Graduation will be held at Parkside Hall located at 180 Park Avenue, San José 95113. The entrance is right next to the Tech Museum. The Hall extends between Park Avenue and San Carlos. On the third page is a map. 1. How do I wear the academic regalia?1 a. To the baccalaureate candidate, the tassel is worn on the right side of the mortar board until official and formal degree confirmation. When instructed to do so, the tassel is moved from the right side to the left side of the mortar board. This act symbolizes the recipient's new and well-earned status. b. Master's degree candidates wear the black tassel on the left side of the mortar board. Master's degree candidates carry their hoods on their right arms. At the proper time, faculty "hood" degree recipients. Remember, if you are taller then the faculty hooder, please bend at your knees slightly. 2. Where should I be, and by when? a. The School’s graduation begins promptly at 2:00, in Parkside Hall on San Carlos (across from the Convention Center and next to the Civic Center). Please be there between 1:00 and 1:15. This will insure time for you to complete your name card! b. I reiterate, please arrive no later than 1:15. 1 Yes, you should dress appropriately under the regalia. No, there is not an award for best shoe, tassel, and accessory coordination—only the pride and confidence you get in knowing that you look good! 3. Where and how do we line up? a. We will line up in the long hallway outside the event room in Parkside Hall. b. While you are lining up, you will fill out your name card. If you are receiving the PPSC, Spanish Certificate, or Gerontology Certificate, please note that on the top of the card. Please write CLEARLY! c. We will line up in two lines; try to have about equal amounts of classmates (e.g. BASW, MSW) on each side. We will line in the order that follows: i. Dean, Directors, and Faculty. ii. BASW Graduates iii. MSW Graduates d. We will enter in pairs and walk down left (sort of center left) aisle. At the front, the faculty will move up the stage. e. As the faculty exit, graduates will move to the right, and into one line. Please try to do so neatly, taking one person from left, then, one person from the right. f. Move across the front of the auditorium (between the chairs and stage) and make a loop to fill the front row of chairs. You will need to move all the way across to the next empty seat before moving to the next row. g. Disabled and students in wheelchairs will receive instructions at rehearsal. The Dean, School’s Director, and Keynote Speaker ii. BASWs iii. MSWs iv. Honors and Awards, Recessional, and Reception 5. How do we walk across the stage? a. BASWs: When instructed, please rise. Starting with the first row, the usher will direct you, row-by-row, to the left aisle. i. Remaining in your line, move up the ramp/steps. The first person hands the card to the reader. The reader reads your name. ii. Walk to the Dr. Hines. Shake her hand (right hand), take diploma (left hand), and smile for the camera. iii. Cross stage, and return to your seat via the far side of the aisle. b. MSWs SJSU: When instructed, please rise. Hood over right arm. The usher will direct you 3 rows at a time. i. If there are BSW students sitting next to you, you will join the row behind you to enter the center aisle. ii. Remaining in your line, move up the ramp/steps. The first person hands the card to the reader. The reader reads your name. iii. Walk to the Dr. Hines. Shake her hand (right hand), take diploma (left hand), and smile for the camera. iv. Cross stage, and move to faculty member for hooding (please, bend at your knees). v. Return to your seat via the far side of the aisle. 6. Enjoy the rest of the ceremony. Recessional. Starting with the first row, follow the faculty out down the right aisle (sort of right center aisle) and out of the event room. It is recommended highly that you do so in a celebratory fashion! Parkside Hall 180 Park Avenue San José 95113 Parking is free at the University. There is metered street parking. There is a parking lot at the Convention Center. The entrance to the Convention Center lot is on Almaden Boulevard between San Carlos Street and Woz Way. There is a parking lot near Peggy Sue’s Diner and Morton’s Steak House on Park Avenue between Almaden Boulevard and Market Street.
