To help improve outcomes for English language learners, the Ministry of Education offers funding to cover tuition fees for teachers who undertake study towards TESSOL qualifications.
Teachers of English language learners in state and state-integrated schools in the Waikato and wider central North Island are invited to apply for a scholarship for one of the following courses:
1.
Local study towards the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (Grad Dip TESOL) at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). The
Ministry of Education will fund each teacher for five of the seven modules that make up the Grad Dip TESOL. This includes the cost of course fees for each module and up to $100 per semester for books. It does not include Wintec student fees or other levies. You are expected to study the five core modules over two years.
2.
Distance study towards the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional
Language (GradCert TEAL) through Massey University. The Ministry of Education will fund each teacher for a total of four papers. This includes course fees and up to $100 per paper for books. It does not include university student fees or other levies. You are expected to study over two years (two papers per year).
The Ministry especially encourages nominations for mainstream/curriculum primary and secondary teachers.
Nominated teachers must:
have at least two years’ classroom teaching experience
be currently teaching new learners of English in mainstream or specialist ESOL classes
have New Zealand residency and New Zealand teaching registration
be committed to completing at least four courses of a TESSOL qualification while employed by your school
agree to provide a one page report on the impact of the training on school and classroom practices to the Ministry’s National Migrant, Refugee and International ESOL
Team at the completion of each course (a template will be provided).
Schools must:
agree to fund a minimum of one teacher release day per course to enable teachers to attend workshops or to undertake intensive study
give the scholarship holders the opportunity to share their learning with colleagues
contact the Ministry if a teacher moves or withdraws from the course.
The selection committee may also take into account:
whether your school already has teachers with TESSOL qualifications
your school’s demonstrated commitment to ESOL professional development.

The ESOL Advisory Committee has selected:
the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Grad Dip
TESOL) (Level 7) taught at the Waikato Institute of Technology as the approved programme for the Waikato area
the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language (GradCert
TEAL) taught extramurally at Massey University as the approved distance education programme.
These programmes will help teachers effectively incorporate knowledge, learning needs and cultural backgrounds of students with English language needs into the classroom.

The Grad Dip TESOL programme consists of seven modules, the first five of which will be funded through the scholarship. On completion of these five modules, you will gain the Grad Cert TESOL, which is a Level 7 exit qualification from the Grad Dip
TESOL.
The two modules for the first year are:
Semester 1 – ESTE603B Linguistics for Language Teaching (15 credits)
Semester 2 – ESTE601 Language Learning Experience (5 credits) and ESTE602
Language Learning Reflections (10 credits), which must be taken concurrently.
Classes in the first year will be held on Tuesdays from 4.15–7.15pm at the Waikato Institute of Technology city campus, starting Tuesday 23 February 2016.
Payment details
The Ministry of Education will pay the scholarship amount at the end of January 2015. A payment of approximately $1600 per person will be made directly into your school’s bank account.
Wintec will invoice the school for the course fees. The scholarship does not cover health, counselling and student services fees.

The school will reimburse participating teachers for the actual cost of books up to $100 per semester.
After we have let you know that your application was successful, you will need to enrol for the course through http:/enrol.massey.ac.nz/ . You may also need to submit verified transcripts and certificates as well as a short CV to the University to support your enrolment.
You must apply for enrolment by 2 December 2015 (if you are a new student to Massey) or by 13 January 2016 (if you have studied with Massey before). If you have any difficulties enrolling, please call the Massey Contact Centre: 0800 MASSEY/0800 627 739.

The GradCert TEAL programme requires you to complete four papers. However, only those papers nominated by the Ministry of Education will be funded through the scholarship.
These core papers are detailed on the Massey University programme brochure.
If you wish to transfer your TESSOL scholarship funding to postgraduate study, email Alyson

for advice on relevant papers and programmes. You will then need to contact Richard von Sturmer at the Ministry of
Education to request to transfer the scholarship funding to postgraduate study and for approval of your programme. Note that if you transfer TESSOL scholarship funding to postgraduate study, it will only cover tuition costs for two relevant postgraduate papers.
Payment details
The Ministry of Education will pay the scholarship amount for the first paper at the end of
January 2016. A payment of approximately $910 per person will be made directly into your school’s bank account. This includes a tuition fee of approximately $685 for a 15-credit paper and a Distance Learning Student Services Levy of $125 (0–15 credits), but does not cover any other non-tuition costs.
Massey University will invoice the teacher for the tuition and non-tuition fees. They will send an invoice with the exact amounts on confirmation of enrolment. You can also check current course fees at http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/admission/fees/fees_home.cfm

The teacher must pass the invoice to the school and the school must pay this invoice by the due date.

Support from the school is crucial if scholarship holders are to meet the burden of study and full-time teaching.
