German Referendar Program The German Referendar Program offers participants a unique opportunity to learn about the Australian legal system while working in the Attorney-General’s Department. As a referendar in the department, you will work on policy and legislative projects for up to three months under the supervision of experienced managers. A typical work day may involve policy discussions, specialised research and meetings with staff in the department and other government agencies. You may be able to attend a sitting of Parliament, follow the debate of a piece of legislation you have worked on, or attend a High Court hearing. You will also be able to share your experience with your Australian colleagues, advising on how a civil law country—like Germany—approaches, or has resolved, a legal issue. We encourage referendare to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities during their time in the program. This can include events organised by the AGD Social Club, lunch time sports (for example touch football and soccer) and activities arranged by the diverse range of networks in the department. We have a Women’s Network; Green Group; Disability Employee Network; Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Intersex Network; and Cultural and Linguistically Diverse Network to name a few. Referendare can nominate to work in areas of the department that deal with civil and commercial law issues. These areas comprise private international law, commercial policy, administrative law, privacy law and copyright law. Why become a German Referendar in the department?
