REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Attorney-General's Department (AGD) is part of the Justice sector of the Government of South Australia and provides high‐level legal services and advice to Ministers and
agencies across the whole of government, specialist policy advice, regulation and compliance, and direct service delivery to the public. This includes the provision of legal
services, including prosecution services, to the State Government and the provision of consumer and corporate regulatory and complaint handling functions. The Department
also delivers rights protection services through a number of statutory authorities. The Chief Executive is responsible for leading, directing and controlling the operations of the
Department.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive are the:

The South Australian Attorney‐General’s Department (AGD) provides high‐level legal services and advice to Ministers and agencies across the whole of government, specialist
policy advice, regulation and compliance, and direct service delivery to the public. AGD seeks to foster justice and harmony through sound laws, protecting people's rights and
strengthening communities. This will be achieved through the following core strategies:

Reduce alcohol-fuelled violence and problem gambling

Support victims of crime and make offenders accountable
Address indigenous disadvantage in law and justice
Provide for the quick and efficient resolution of civil and administrative disputes
Provide specialist policy and legal advice to government and ministers
To protect people's rights and promote public confidence in our institutions
and services

Uphold and maintain the public integrity of our institutions
Advocate for and protect the rights of people experiencing vulnerability

AGD provides a legal infrastructure for South Australia that is just, equitable, and robust, with a focus on prevention. It promotes fair, timely and economical access to justice
through the provision of legal, civil, prosecutorial and legislative services. The Department fosters community safety and wellbeing by advocating for and protecting the rights of
individuals, in particular, the most vulnerable in the community, and promoting cultural diversity and equality. By working with businesses to achieve better compliance, the
Department promotes a fair, secure and balanced marketplace, where consumers are protected and know their rights.
The Department consists of approximately 1568 full‐time equivalent staff and has a total operating budget in the order of $260 million.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE
The Chief Executive is responsible for:

Accepting the priorities of the Government and delivering on them within available resources.
Providing leadership and strategic management to the Attorney-General's Department which results in the provision of legal services, including prosecution services, to
the State Government and the provision of rights protection, consumer and corporate regulatory and complaint handling functions.
Ensuring the management, monitoring and reporting of the physical, human and financial resources of the Attorney-General's Department.
Implementing a wide range of projects and initiatives to deliver on government policy objectives.
Promoting continuous improvement in service and performance resulting in higher levels of innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, accountability and collaboration.
Keeping Ministers informed of any emerging factors that could preclude achievement of agreed performance outcomes or have a major influence on the justice sector.
Contribute to whole-of-government results by establishing cooperative relationships with Senior Management Council and other public sector agencies.
Ensuring sound principles of personnel management are in place in the Department, including the implementation of all relevant Government policies such as those
addressing principles of equity, diversity, social justice, occupational health, safety and welfare and ethics consistent with the code of conduct.
SELECTION CRITERIA








Strong strategic leadership skills including demonstrated experience in driving change.
Highly developed skills in communicating, leading, influencing and negotiating.
Understanding of the public accountability required to provide a safe and justice society.
Understanding of various community sectors and how AGD can best meet community needs.
Integrity, honesty, fairness, impartiality and commitment.
Experience in the leadership of a disciplined force with clear command structures and standards of behaviour.
Alibility to apply political impartiality and independence.
High public/police credibility and ability to inspire public confidence.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS




A contract appointment will be made for a period of up to five years.
The incumbent will be required to participate in a performance review process.
The incumbent will be required to maintain a safe working environment by adopting appropriate management practices consistent with the role and have an
understanding of, experience in, and ability to manage to the spirit and principles of the Premier’s Safety Commitment and the legislative requirements of the
Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act, utilising the AS/NZS ISO 31000 Risk Management Standard, or to an equivalent set of standards.
The incumbent will be required to ensure, as far as practicable, that the objects of the Public Sector Act 2009 are advanced and the public sector principles and Code
of Ethics are observed in the management and day-to-day operations of the agency.
