Solve problem # 1 with a graphical solution.
1. Three forces act on box S. Force X exerts a force of 75 N at and angle of 40 degrees.
Force Y exerts a force of 80 N at an angle of 140 degrees. Force Z exerts a force of 90 N
at 295 degrees. Find the magnitude of the resultant and the angle at which it acts.
Solve problem # 2 algebraically.
2. A ship sails east for 1700 km but current and winds blow the ship 250 km south of the
expected location. How far and at what angle was the new position of the ship? What
vector should have been used to reach the port that was 1700 km east considering the
weather and ocean conditions?
3. Two scales support a hanging mass. The hanging mass (resistance force) is 750 N.
The angle between the scales is 50 degrees. Each scale has a reading of 400 N. Diagram
the setup. Add the force vectors together and draw the resultant force vector. Compare
the resultant force vector to the resistance vector. Explain the relationship.
Solve problem #4 using vector resolution.
4. Draw a setup to the problem. Have it checked by the instructor before solving the
problem.
Two people are trying to lift a log out of a ravine. Two ropes are tied around the log at a
common point. The pullers are pulling in opposite directions as they stand on the edge of
the ravine. Tom exerts a force of 180 N at an angle of 120 degrees. Ray exerts a force of
120 N at an angle of 40 degrees. What are the combined horizontal and combined
vertical components of the forces? What is the resultant force and angle of the resultant
force?
5. Draw a setup to the problem. Have it checked by the instructor before solving the
problem.
A 100 kg sign (980 N) is supported by two wires that meet at the middle of the sign.
The wires meet with an angle of 110 degrees. What is the force on each wire?
6. How would the force on the wire change if the angle between the two wires was
reduced to 50 degrees?
