McCombs School of Business College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee (CTBAC) Application for the 2015-2016 Academic Year Recent discussions across campus regarding the state of the tuition and budget-setting processes indicate that an integrated approach to budgetary decision-making is necessary. Toward that end, the McCombs CTBAC aims to enhance and make more transparent student and faculty participation in the university’s tuition and budget-setting process at the college level. A College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee (CTBAC) was created within the McCombs School of Business in the fall of 2011. This committee includes students and staff who gather information and comment to deans and other college stakeholders about student opinions on tuition and budget priorities. The CTBAC helps to educate students on the budget- and tuition-setting process, identify priorities for the college, recommend changes in tuition, and advise stakeholders on the budget. This committee goes through a process similar to that of the current Tuition Policy Advisory Committee (TPAC) by making written recommendations on such matters to the Dean. The recommendations of the CTBAC will also be available for public comment from the college community before being forwarded to the Provost for further consideration. This committee serves the interests of students, faculty, the dean and college chairs, and university administrators. Students will benefit from being involved in helping shape the future of their college. In addition to speaking on behalf of their peers, student committee members will also help college administrators communicate with the student body about the tuition and budget-setting process and thereby help to generate student engagement and support for the college’s fiscal decisions. The college dean benefits when his or her students and faculty are informed and engaged in the decisionmaking process. A dean whose students participate and invest in tuition and budget discussions will strengthen the bonds students have to their particular college. Moreover, tuition and budget proposals submitted by deans will carry more weight with university administrators (Provost, President, etc.) if their students and faculty support them. University-wide leaders (President, Provost, CFO) benefit from an informed engaged student body at the college level. CTBACs will help insure the tuition and budget-setting process is more transparent and inclusive. Through CTBACs, students and faculty have a voice in helping identify the strategic needs and priorities of their own college. The McCombs CTBAC will seek to leverage faculty’s intimate knowledge of the direction and priorities of their disciplines as well as deans’ awareness of resource availability to provide immediate feedback on the success of college initiatives. Purpose The 2015-2016 McCombs CTBAC will serve various purposes within the McCombs School of Business. The primary functions of the CTBAC include, but are not limited to, the following: a) b) c) d) e) To discuss college-level budget priorities; To recommend such tuition adjustments as are necessary to meet those priorities; To raise awareness and increase education of tuition setting procedures; To solicit feedback from students, faculty, and staff; and To work with other budget advisory committees to collect input from members of the university community about university-wide budgetary recommendations and changes.
