November 14, 2001 TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED: SUBJECT: Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate Incentive Program Campus Awards for May 2001 Examinations In 1993, the Texas Legislature adopted the Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) Incentive Program. One component of the law provides for campus awards of up to $100 for each student who scores three or better on an AP exam or four or better on an IB exam. Last year the Texas Education Agency was able to award over $3 million to local high schools for their success. In order to make campus awards, estimated at $100 per student, legislation requires that campuses complete the attached form and return it to the agency. The form is being sent to all high school campuses. The person who probably can best complete the required information is your campus or district AP/IB coordinator. Allocations to campuses cannot be made until all forms are returned so it is requested that you complete and return it no later than November 30, 2001. Agency staff is hoping to complete the review of information and make campus awards no later than February 2002. According to the AP/IB legislation, these are “school awards” (Section 28.053) and should not be held as district funds, but should be distributed to the high school campus and/or campuses at which the award was actually earned. The Texas Education Agency can only make payments to districts, not to individual campuses. The district will be obligated to ensure that all monies received will be properly distributed to the high school campuses involved. If you have questions regarding completion of the form, please contact Mel Fuller, Director, Texas Center for AP/IB Initiatives at 512/463-5374 or mfuller@tea.state.tx.us. The growth in AP/IB programs is one of the most notable success stories in Texas education. On behalf of the agency, I commend you on your commitment to high quality and wish you continued success with this year’s AP/IB courses and examinations. Sincerely, Jim Nelson Commissioner of Education Attachment Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate Examination Public High School Campus Award Data Form 2000-2001 In 1993, the Texas Legislature adopted the Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) Incentive Program.
