Students are required to have two reference letters (“Letters of Appraisal”) as part of their application. Referees should be faculty members who have had sufficient opportunity to assess the applicant’s potential and if applicable, the importance of any publications.

 Students must contact their potential referees well in advance of the department deadline to inquire as to whether they would be able to provide a strong letter of support for the applicant.

 Students should provide their referees with: o a copy of their C.V., o transcripts, o a list of research contributions, o a copy of their Program of Study, and o a list of community involvement or other extracurricular activities that demonstrate leadership qualities.

 Students should also provide their referees with SSHRC’s evaluation and adjudication guidelines .

Research Proposal

Students are strongly encouraged to develop their research proposals early and ensure that they are applying to the correct agency. Students are only allowed to apply to one

Tri-Council competition and it is important to ensure it is the correct one or they may be disqualified. Students are encouraged to refer to the “ Selecting a Funding Agency ” information on SSHRC’s website for more details about applying to the correct agency.
