Location
The appointee will be based at the Lisburn Campus but will be
required to be available for work at any of the College sites as
required.
Hours of work
0.565 FTE. 814 annualised hours of which up to 468 for student
contact time and the remainder for associated duties. However
the post holder will be required to adopt a flexible approach
(including evening work) and to devote such time as may be
required by the exigencies of the service.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
It will be the duty of the newly appointed Lecturer to deliver and develop the provision
of counselling and health / care courses across all sections of the School.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In particular the post holder shall, under the guidance of the Assistant Head of School:

Teach a range of counselling subjects within the school to include integrative
counselling and cognitive behaviour therapy

Teach a range of other related counselling and health / care subjects across
the Institute as may be required.

Develop the provision of counselling and health / social care subjects
throughout the School to suit the curricular needs of the workforce within this
vocational sector.

Assist with interviews and the guidance and counselling of students.

Be actively involved in the quality assurance systems within the institute.

Be a proactive team member including regular attendance at team meetings
involvement in development of activities which directly impact upon the student
experience – induction, tutorials and review and evaluation.

Assist the Head of School / Assistant Head of School in the preparation of
plans and estimates for the acquisition and updating of equipment and
accommodation within the School.

Establish, develop and maintain links with the following sectors:
 Community & Voluntary,
 Health Care,
 Business & Industry,
 Training & Employment organisations
with a view to providing suitable courses in counselling and health / social care.

Maintain and develop links with Schools, Colleges and Universities with the
aim of promoting counselling and health care in the College.

Assist in the recruitment of students through attendance at open days, careers
conventions.

Develop and participate in student inductions.

Participate in general marketing activities to develop publicity materials as
required, participation in open days and other publicity events to promote the
Institute curriculum offer and the salon’s services.

Participate in Business Development activities, including developing the course
provision; assisting in the identification and preparation of submissions in bids
for funding from external sources or identification of international links;
development of partnerships to promote the Institute’s learning provision.

Participate in all aspects of administration associated with the role and the
School including coordination and all quality processes.

Participate in project and working groups as appropriate.

Adhere to the Institute’s policies and procedures and in particular be familiar
with SENDO (Special Educational Needs & Disability (NI) Order 2005) Code of
Practice.

Participate in staff training and development activities to update and enhance
own knowledge, skills and professional competence needed to carry out role
effectively.

Undertake other duties as assigned from time to time by the Principal & Chief
Executive, Director, Head of School, Assistant Head of School or persons to
whom they have delegated authority.

NOTES
1. This is a description of the job as it is at present constituted. The duties and responsibilities are

3. This is a post which is governed by The Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults
(Northern Ireland) Order 2003. Before appointing anyone to this post, it is policy to
ask for the relevant check to be carried out by the Department of Health, Social Services and
Public Safety (DHSSPS).

6. All staff at Senior Lecturer Level and above (including equivalent staff on NJC Terms &
Conditions) are required to participate in evening and holiday cover rotas as required.
7. All Staff are required to contribute to a healthy and safe working environment and to adhere to all
health and safety regulations and College policies. In addition, as a Senior Lecturer you are
required to contribute to developing a culture that is conducive to good health, safety and security
practices.
8. All staff have a responsibility for ensuring that risks are managed at College, team and individual
level. This process will include the assessment and effective control of all acceptable risk
situations. However, as a Senior Lecturer you will be required to maintain a high level of
awareness and assist in the process of reporting incidents, assessing risks and reporting unsafe
occurrences and co-operate with any investigations undertaken.

9. All Budget holders will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a balanced budget across their
area of responsibility, including the delivery of any agreed cost improvement programmes

Selection Criteria

Essential Assessment Criteria
This includes Circular Requirements and College Requirements. You must complete all
sections.
A. Essential Circular requirements
1. GCSE English (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Communication; and
GCSE Maths (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Numeracy, or NICATS
Access Maths Modules; or already be recognised by the Department of Education for
teaching in Further Education in NI.
2. A University Degree* with a minimum content of 50% in Counselling
Or
A qualification in the specialist area in which the applicant is to teach; with a minimum
content of 50% in Counselling.
This qualification should be at Level 5 or above on the Qualifications and Credit
Framework (QCF) / National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England and Northern
Ireland.
Plus
3 years relevant industrial, professional or business experience
* A Degree obtained at the University in the UK or the Republic of Ireland; or
* A Degree obtained at any other University, provided the Department accepts the standard and
content of that degree as equivalent to those stated above; or Any qualification deemed by the
Department to be equivalent to a university degree.
B. Essential College requirements
1. GCSE English (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Communication; and
GCSE Maths (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Numeracy, or NICATS
Access Maths Modules; or already be recognised by the Department of Education for

3. Have two years relevant industrial, professional or business experience in counselling or
a related discipline
4 Have excellent administrative, planning and organisational
skills.
5 Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral

Desirable Assessment Criteria
1.
Hold a recognised teaching qualification
2.
Have experience of teaching / training at Level 4 and above
3.
Demonstrate evidence of post qualifying practice as a counsellor
4.
Have experience of working with young people 16 yrs + and adults
5.
Demonstrate competency in IT skills
