ASSOCIATE SUPERINTENDENT(S)
The Associate Superintendent is responsible to the Superintendent of Schools for the
supervision of both elementary and secondary schools in the Vancouver Board of
Education, and for the management of certain responsibilities within the district
structure. At this time, there is more than one opening for the position of Associate
Superintendent.
General Job Description
The Associate Superintendent:















forms part of the district management team in providing leadership and
recommending action in the implementation of district programs and policies;
supervises the administration of the School Act and the Regulations;
supervises the implementation of the goals of both the Ministry of Education and
of School District 39;
accepts duties as assigned by the Superintendent and acts as the
Superintendent’s delegate;
provides educational leadership to the schools based on knowledge of the needs
of specific schools and the goals of the Vancouver school system;
consults with administrators, staff, students and parents and becomes informed
about each school, its philosophy and its goals in order to make appropriate
decisions;
must be familiar with the use of technology for teaching and learning;
considerable knowledge of current trends in education especially related to 21 st
century learning;
discusses, on a regular basis, the goals and specific objectives of administrators
and evaluates the administrator’s progress toward achieving these;
evaluates the work of principals and vice-principals;
evaluates schools to ensure that effective programs of instruction are advanced
and maintained;
assists the principal in evaluating and reporting on the work of teachers in
schools, as required in the School Act;
works with other Associate Superintendents and Directors of various divisions in
developing district policy and programs;
works with the Human Resources Division in the decisions relating to selection,
replacement and transfer of staff;
identifies, selects and assists in the training of school district personnel who are
selected for positions of leadership at the school and district level;

meets regularly with the school administrators to clarify matters of school district
policy, and to provide a forum for the discussion of relevant topics;
provides an opportunity by being present in schools, for more accessible contact
for teachers, parents and students to a senior level of school district
administration;
attends meetings of schools consultative committees, school staff committees or
councils, and acts in a consultative capacity as requested by specific groups,
e.g., district parent representatives;
attends Board meetings and serves in an advisory capacity on Board committees
as assigned by the Superintendent;
facilitates communication between the trustees and the schools;
participates in school district professional development, curriculum and
evaluation programs;
works with other employees of the Board to ensure that services are delivered to
schools; and
assists administrators in the implementation of Collective Agreements.
Experience and Qualifications:
 successful teaching and school-based administrative experience, preferably in a
setting with significant cultural, social, and economic diversity;
 a minimum of a Master’s degree in Leadership, Administration, Curriculum or a
related field; and
 membership in or ability to qualify for membership in the B.C. College of
Teachers.
