COLLEGE OF ARTS, CELTIC STUDIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK, Ireland Murphy Irish Exchange Program PhD Scholarship TERMS AND CONDITIONS (2012/2013) The Murphy Irish Exchange Program has been established to promote research in Irish Studies through a greater understanding between postgraduates (PhD level) of the University of Notre Dame and University College Cork by fully integrating the students into the academic life and social cultures of each institution. At the University of Notre Dame, this exchange program will be administered by The Keough-Naughton Institute of Irish Studies - Dr. Christopher Fox, Director. At University College Cork, Professor Caroline Fennell, Head, College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, will be the exchange administrator. The exchange will commence with the fall semester of 2012. The exchange student selection will be at the discretion of each institution. The initial exchange postgraduate will be a PhD student from University College Cork. The University of Notre Dame’s Keough-Naughton Institute of Irish Studies will provide all Murphy Irish Exchange Program students with two round-trip tickets per academic year. Additionally, the Institute of Irish Studies at Notre Dame will cover the administrative costs. A stipend of $12,000 (US) will be provided to each exchange student (whether from UCC or Notre Dame) from the Murphy Irish Exchange Program Endowment at the University of Notre Dame. Both institutions agree to waive tuition charges for classes and will endeavour to provide teaching opportunities for the exchange student when appropriate. It is hoped that the Murphy Irish Exchange Program will grow to involve more students and will serve as a catalyst for many collaborative efforts between the two institutions. 1. The Murphy Irish Exchange Program PhD Scholarship will have a value of $12,000 US per annum, tenable for one academic year, to be spent in residence at the University of Notre Dame. Two round-trip airfares (Cork-Chicago) will also be included in the Scholarship. 2. The Murphy Irish Exchange Program PhD Scholarship is for postgraduates who are currently registered for the degree of PhD in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) at University College Cork, Ireland and who are working on a topic within the area of Irish Studies. 3. Applications are invited from registered PhD students in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences who will be in their second, third or fourth year of the PhD in the academic year 2012-2013. 4. Applicants should complete the Murphy Irish Exchange Program PhD Scholarship application form. 5. Applications will not be assessed if they are incomplete, or have been postmarked after the advertised closing date. 6. Selection of successful applicants on the basis of the materials supplied will be by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Graduate Studies Committee, with a representative from Irish Studies in UCC, and a representative from the Development and Alumni Office. The award of the Murphy Irish Exchange PhD scholarship will take place only if the Committee is satisfied that there is a candidate of sufficient merit. 7. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. The Scholarship holder and his/her research mentor at the University of Notre Dame must submit two reports--one after six months, and a second at the end of the exchange--to the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Graduate Studies Committee. If the progress reports are deemed unsatisfactory, the scholarship will be terminated. 9. Should a teaching opportunity be arranged by the University of Notre Dame, the recipient will provide teaching and examining (if required), in an area reasonably compatible with his/her expertise, and for a number of hours (to a maximum of three per week) as agreed by the host institution, the recipient and the recipient’s supervisor at UCC. 10. The recipient must enrol for 9 credit hours each semester at Notre Dame as a non matriculating graduate student with an additional 1 credit each semester in the Keough-Naughton Institute Irish Studies interdisciplinary proseminar. This last brings all Irish Studies students in various departments together biweekly for papers and discussion with graduate faculty and distinguished visiting scholars. 11. The student must be in residence at the University of Notre Dame during class and exam periods, exclusive of official breaks (mid-term; Christmas, Easter). The residency requirement period for 2012-2013 is from 15 August 2012 to 10 May 2013. 12. The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences should be notified in good time of any medical or personal problems likely to cause disruption to the scholarship holder’s research schedule. 13. Applications will be assessed according to the criteria as specified in the application, which include the following: the applicant’s profile; the applicant’s research topic and its contribution to Irish Studies; how the applicant’s research would benefit from the opportunity to spend a year at the University of Notre Dame with support from the Murphy Irish Exchange Program, and how s/he would engage with the available resources and scholarly community at the University of Notre Dame; the applicant’s research plan for 2012-2013; the applicant’s progress to date on the PhD research project. 14. Successful applicants must confirm their intention to take up the Scholarship within ten days of notification and should then arrange visa requirements via the International Education Office, UCC and the equivalent office at the University of Notre Dame. Further details on visa arrangements and enrolment at Notre Dame will be provided to the successful applicant.
