Medical Assistant Seward County Community College Area Technical School Medical Assistants are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing medical care to patients. The profession of medical assisting has grown to meet the continuing demand for well-educated, highly skilled, and versatile individuals who work with the physician and other professionals to deliver the highest possible level of patient care. Medical Assistants are people qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room and the physician office laboratory. Career Opportunities Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations as the health services industry expands due to technological advances in medicine, and a growing and aging population. Graduates may be employed in physicians’ offices, inpatient and outpatient care centers, ambulatory health care centers, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and nursing care facilities. Degree Options Seward County Community College/Area Technical School offers a 10-month Certificate and a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in medical assisting. Students successfully completing the Certificate or A.A.S. in medical assisting become eligible to apply to take the National Certifying Examination for Medical Assistants as well as the Kansas State Nurse Aide and Medication Aide Examinations. Advising Each medical assistant student at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School is assigned an advisor. This advisor is available to give the student guidance regarding the appropriate courses needed to satisfy degree requirements. Your advisor is also available to provide direction regarding study habits, available resources, and general information regarding college life. Format The format of the program is online and on campus. Some of the courses will be offered as hybrid courses that combine both classroom and online work, while other courses will be offered entirely online. These formats are convenient for the commuting students. Facilities The medical assistant program is located on the Technical Campus at 2215 N. Kansas Avenue and is an extension of the main campus of Seward County Community College/Area Technical School. The Technical Campus houses classrooms, a skills laboratory, a mock physician’s office, student lounge, computer laboratory, and faculty/staff offices. Admissions Procedures Acceptance of students into the medical assistant program is dependent upon available openings in each program. Applicants should apply beginning December 1 with applications being accepted until the program is full. A class is accepted annually, with classes beginning in August. Selection criteria and procedures for the medical assistant program are available to all prospective applicants.
