CASE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE MD/MS IN BIOMEDICAL INVESTIGATION For students in the University Program or the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of CWRU (the College Program) The MD/MS in Biomedical Investigation is a joint degree program for students who have already been accepted into the Case School of Medicine, in either the University Program or the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of CWRU (the College Program). Students may apply for the MD/MS at any time after arriving at medical school and prior to the beginning of the second year of medical school. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as they decide to pursue the combined degree to provide ample time for selecting a track (see below), obtaining graduate credit for MD coursework, and choosing the appropriate graduate courses to take during the first two years of medical school. There is no additional tuition charged for graduate courses for this combined degree program. Students in the University Program who pursue the combined degree will need to extend their program of study for the MD degree to 5 years and will pay a continuation fee for the extra year of study (research year). Students in the College Program already pay the continuation fee for the 5th year of the usual College Program curriculum. It is anticipated that will be able to complete the combined degree within the 5 year MD curriculum. Note that the research mentor or his/her department supports the continuation fee and cost-of-living stipend for the research year for students in the MD/MS. Students wishing to pursue the MD/MS in Biomedical Investigation must: 1. Complete this application form, and Graduate applications parts A and BThe application will be reviewed by the MD/MS Admissions Committee, which will forward its decision to the Dean of Graduate Studies at CWRU. The Dean of Graduate Studies will notify students of their admission into the program. 2. Remain in good standing in their medical school program in order to remain in the MD/MS Program. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs for their respective program must provide a letter to the MD/MS Program Oversight Committee 1) at the time of application to the MD/MS and 2) at the end of each academic year, confirming that the students is in good standing as a medical student. If a student’s status in the MD program changes during an academic year, the Associate Dean or CCF Portfolio Assessment Committee is expected to notify the Program Directors in a timely manner. 3. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in their graded graduate courses. 4. Complete course requirements for the MD/MS, including: No more than 6 credits for medical school coursework, which will be graded on a scale of A, B, C, D, F to comply with requirements of the Graduate School. The process of grading and the specific course requirements for the medical school coursework differ between the two MD programs, because of differences in the curriculum and the student assessment processes. In order to receive credit for medical school courses, student must register for graduate credit at the beginning of the course (i.e., retroactive credit will not be allowed). At least 9 graded credits of graduate courses chosen by the student and his/her adviser; some tracks require more graduate courses and students should consult with their adviser to ensure that they meet all course requirements for their chosen track in the MD/MS in a timely manner. A scientific integrity course (0 credits).CMED 500 IBMS 500 On being a professional scientist The periodic MD/MS Seminar Series (2 non-graded credits) At least a full year of research, culminating in a written research report that will be defended by the student in an oral examination. They will receive non-graded credit towards the MS degree for the research and 1 non-graded credit for the exam. Applications are anticipated by August 15th of their second year of medical school. A research mentor and project should be selected within six months of beginning the research effort.
