SUMMARY OF MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS









Provided strong fiscal management during period of declining state resources and increased
enrollments, resulting in strategic budgeting, increased extramural funding and the
reallocation of funds to established and emerging priorities
Assumed a leadership role in development of the College’s five-year strategic plan as a
member of the President’s College Planning Council, which also implements the plan
Designed a five-year strategic and operating plan for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
(FAH) that has been incorporated into the College’s Academic Plan
Developed an assessment plan for Arts and Humanities and the General Education Program
that has become a campus model
Board Member and Director of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Seminar for
New Deans, training nearly 200 deans in issues of fiscal management, development, planning
and personnel
Raised funds for the $2.6 million renovation of Warren Enters Theatre, oversaw planning and
design, and produced the sold-out opening gala
Provided supervision of the internationally known Art Conservation program (one of only
three in the United States), including a successful $3 million matching fund campaign, $6
million endowment, and $500,000 in annual student fellowships
Increased FAH visibility in Western New York and developed community outreach activities,
resulting in Arts and Humanities Month, over 100 campus cultural events annually, and
numerous partnerships with local cultural organizations
Created new sense of community among students, faculty and staff, leading to increased
participation in shared governance, support for campus initiatives, increased grant writing,
student-centered initiatives, increased access to facilities, and stronger institutional
commitment

Provide leadership for nine departments, three interdisciplinary programs, the writing
program, general education and three centers; 120 full-time and 110 part-time faculty; a $9
million budget
Oversee academic services for 2200 majors, including programs for at-risk and highachieving students
Promote issues of equity and diversity across all areas of the faculty and the institution,
including faculty hiring, admissions, curriculum and extra-curricular programs
Position six academic departments for accreditation visits in support of the College’s goal of
100 percent accreditation
Oversee personnel matters, including faculty development, promotion and tenure, collective
bargaining issues and faculty and staff recognition
Manage the college’s Performing Arts Center and return to fiscal stability, including
$300,000 budget, 55,000 annual attendance, and first revenue generating seasons since 1987
Lead assessment initiatives, including implementation across all departments and general
education assessment, resulting in the first comprehensive assessment program on campus
Institute and promote initiatives that bring visibility to FAH, including Arts and Humanities
Month, gallery openings, performing arts events and readings attended by 12,000 to 15,000
people annually
Advocate for the needs of Arts and Humanities, departments, faculty, staff and students on
campus as a member of the Vice Presidents Council, the Academic Council and Budget
Priorities Task Force
Developed a comprehensive plan for FAH, reallocating resources to high-need areas,
proposing major curricular changes, and promoting greater cross-department initiatives and
cooperation, leading to re-structuring of departments and new programs
Instituted programs for high-achieving students, including research fellowships and
undergraduate research
Drafted four-year technology plan, including replacement cycles, technology initiatives and
support for non-digital technology
Created new approaches to roles and responsibilities of chairs, resulting in increased
autonomy and responsibility for chairs, solid and effective teamwork, greater openness in
FAH operations, and increased effectiveness in working with the Provost and President
Raised extramural funding through grant writing and development initiatives, resulting in
renovation of the Warren Enters Theatre, increased endowments in Art Conservation, support
for various FAH initiatives, and increased alumni support in most programs
Oversaw fundraising for the $2.6 million renovation of Warren Enters Theatre and $1.2
million renovation of the Performing Arts Center, co-chaired the program study for $30
million Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
Developed a plan to make the Writing Program an autonomous unit and provide full-time
faculty
Proposed and implemented learning communities through Center for Interdisciplinary Studies
Enhanced visibility of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on the Buffalo State campus and
throughout the community, through increased programming and community engagement
Drafted new FAH bylaws to reflect current organization and vision of the Faculty

Oversaw all operational and personnel matters related to the Admissions, Registrar and
Financial Aid offices, including 50 support staff
Developed and implemented campus-wide recruitment and retention initiatives, supporting
the first enrollment increase since 1990
Participated in reorganization of Academic Affairs and directed development of the
Enrollment Support and Retention Programs unit, merging 10 separate units into 2 more
student centered offices
Established satellite admissions office in New York City to enhance downstate recruiting
Reviewed and recommended changes to admissions policies, new student programs,
advisement, college marketing
Managed technology matters in Academic Affairs, including $2 million in annual
expenditures

rated by the external review team
Coordinated complete major program and curriculum revision, the first in over a decade
Implemented student recruitment and retention strategies, resulting in 60 percent enrollment
growth in three years

Completed scheduling for each semester; implemented a plan that reduced teaching loads
while preserving FTE’s, increasing faculty morale and scholarly productivity
Established interdisciplinary initiatives with Performing Arts and Art Education

 Member of a team of 6 deans from U.S. colleges charged with proposing, designing
and implementing a new curriculum for College of Humanities and Social Science;
primary program designer and evaluator of the Communication Department
Director (2004-2005), Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences New Deans Seminars (2002
and 2003)
 Selected facilitators, organized sessions, worked with the CCAS Executive Director
on site selection and meeting arrangements for 80 new deans each year
