Discipline Procedures & Managing Student Behavior Elementary Classroom Procedures Positive classroom environment: Teachers regularly remind children of the school rules. Focusing on a particular rule should be done when the need arises. Self-disciplined children and their teachers interact positively and learn together in the classroom without the need to apply SBM procedures. The majority of children accept full responsibility for their own behavior. Stage 1 is managed by the classroom teacher without administrative involvement. Stage 1: Verbal Warning Low-level teacher/child interaction for unacceptable behavior. Teacher asks“What are you doing?” What has happened? What are the facts? “What are you supposed to be doing?” “What can you do about this?” Name on Board Check by name At this stage, the child has had three or four opportunities to refer to the class rules and resolve the problem with the class teacher. Stage 2 involves the administration by collecting and recording the blue “Thinking Spot” sheets. Stage 2: Child placed in classroom “Thinking Spot.” Child should be given a blue form to fill out and given an appropriate amount of time to work through the form. Student is given up to three opportunities to go back and re-word or amend the form to the teacher’s satisfaction. The student at this stage is given the opportunity to correct the situation. If the child is unable to resolve the concern with the classroom teacher, the teacher may assist the child with suitable questions in a non-threatening manner. The child may return to the “Thinking Spot” up to 3 times to resolve any one problem. Stage 3 involves both the administration and the parents. Stage 3: Teacher fills out a Student Referral Form (Partner Room Red Form). Child is given a Thinking Spot Partner Room Referral Form. This is given to the teacher in the partner room to note when the child was sent. Child should be sent to the partner room to fill out the form and given the appropriate time to complete the form to the classroom teacher’s satisfaction. Parent letter Partner Room Placement to be sent home. Parents must sign letter and return it to the school. At this stage a parent interview may be set up to work with them to develop some strategies. Agreement reached. The child returns to class. If still unresolved proceed to Stage 4. Stage 4 requires a parent interview and an action plan to be developed with the school, administration and sometimes student services or other outside agencies. The student must spend the amount of days suspended in the partner room with work prepared by the classroom teacher. Stage 4: Teacher fills out a Pink Referral Form and notifies administration immediately. The child is given work and a pink Thinking Spot and sent to the Administration. They will then take over and make sure that all forms are complete and the child is taken to their Partner Room. A parent/teacher(s)/child conference is to be arranged by the Administration. The child is placed in the Partner Room with work until parents come to the school. This will be a period of up to 2 days only (In-school suspension). * Additional information from Policy JGC/JGE, Student Suspension/Expulsion is provided following this procedure. Failure to reach a satisfactory conclusion or if the parents fail to make an appointment with the school, the child will move to Stage 5, which is suspension out of school. By this stage the child has been given several opportunities for resolving the problem with concerned teachers. The child has disrupted the harmonious atmosphere conducive to the learning of all children. Stage 5: Out of school suspension. Suspensions and Exclusions Under BVSD policy, a student cannot generally be suspended for more than 5 consecutive days. A student may be suspended or expelled for serious offenses included in the BVSD Discipline Guidelines such as: physical assault of staff or students, possession of illegal or dangerous substances or weapons or, Internet crime and pornography. Education instruction must be made available to a student suspended for 3 or more consecutive school days or for a total of 5 or more school days in a school year. Stage 6: Exclusion (Expulsion) from school An exclusion panel will be set up in line with the BVSD Policy on exclusion panels. (Panels have school and community representation) This is handled through the District Office. For a child to be excluded from school it must be approved by the Director for Education (BVSD). Middle & High School Classroom Discipline Procedures 1. Warning - Discuss with teacher at next convenient time to correct behavior. Our goal is to keep the student in class as much as possible with consideration of the circumstances. 2. Isolation - Student must spend some time alone to reflect on his or her actions and formulate ways to correct the behavior; our goal is to keep the student in class as much as possible with consideration of the circumstances. 3. Classroom removal - Student has been given plenty of opportunities to correct their behavior and have failed. At this point the student is removed from the class and placed in the in-school suspension room. The student will be given work by the teacher for that time period and must complete their work in this room. The student will not return to that class for the remainder of the day. The teacher will supply the student with class work to complete during this time. The teacher will notify the parents of the student by way of phone call. 4. In-school Suspension - Either the student has continued with his or her disruptive behavior and has not corrected the behavior or the student was involved in an incident that required this form of immediate action. At this stage, the student is sent to the Dean of Students for a conference. The student and the Dean will call the parents of the students and request a conference. The student is placed in the In-school suspension room for the remainder of the day and must complete their class work. The student will be granted re-entry to class after the student and the student's parents have successfully completed a re-admittance conference. 5. Out-of-school Suspension - The exclusion of a student from attending school and participating in school activities for a specified and limited time. The school can suspend students for up to 5 days. The BVSD can approve a further 5 days upon request 6. Expulsion - "Expulsion" means the exclusion of a student from attending school and participating in school activities for a specified period of time not to extend beyond one calendar year. Expulsion of a student with disabilities does not include a cessation of all educational services. These procedures allow the student many opportunities to correct their behavior before serious discipline is enforced. Students are responsible for all class work missed due to removal from class and in-school and out of school suspensions. Incident Report Procedures If the Dean is not in his or her office, the student is to fill out an incident report (located on the bulletin board across from the Dean’s office) and leave it in the Dean’s box outside the Dean’s office door. If the Dean does not return to the office during that period, the student is to return to class. The Dean will locate the student and deal with the issues as soon as possible. The Dean will report the action taken to the referring teacher or staff member. Parents are encouraged to complete an incident report form if they witness any harassment or bullying activity. A copy of these forms will be available in the main office. The following is an excerpt about classroom suspension authority from BVSD’s Student Suspension/Expulsion Policy. Peak to Peak did not waive this policy and follows it. The complete policy is available on BVSD’s website at http://www.bvsd.k12.co.us/sb/policies/JGD_JGE.htm.
