Academic Staff—Teaching (AST)/Artists-in-Residence (AR)
Policies and Procedures
All individuals who teach a course for credit at Stanford University must have a
professorial appointment or an Academic Staff-Teaching or Other Teaching Staff
appointment approved for the quarter or term in which the course is offered. University
policies governing the appointment of Academic Staff—Teaching/Artists-in-Residence
(AST/AR) are contained in the Faculty Handbook, Chapter 6. H&S policies described in
this document supplement and extend the policies contained in the Faculty Handbook.
The H&S policies cover only individuals who are benefits-eligible, that is, appointed for
at least 50% FTE for six months or longer. Oversight of AST/AR is the responsibility of
the Faculty Affairs Office in the HSDO. Department or Program Administrators are
responsible for appointments of AST/AR, subject to the approval of the cognizant dean
and/or the Faculty Affairs Office.
1.
Definition of Full-Time
Employees of Stanford University are eligible for benefits based on the level of their
appointment. Employees who are appointed at 50% or more and for six months or longer
are considered to be “benefits-eligible” with the exact level of University benefits
depending on the exact percentage of full-time equivalent status. AST/AR are appointed
on an academic year, that is, a nine-month, basis.
The percentage of full-time for AST/AR typically depends on the number of courses
taught each quarter. The guidelines below reflect differences among departments.
Departments that do not follow the guidelines must describe the rationale for their
standard before appointments will be approved.
• 6 courses: This is the general standard for most departments.
• 9 courses: The Language Center standard
• 24 individual lessons per quarter: Music Department only
If an individual is assigned significant non-teaching duties such as advising, program
direction and oversight, administration, etc., the number of courses may be reduced.
Departments will be required to provide an explanation on the Form T if a specific
appointment does not meet the guidelines.

Compensation
Annual salaries for benefits-eligible AST/AR are established on a nine-month basis,
although they may be paid over twelve months, at the request of the individual; the
appointment year is typically September 1st through August 31st. The following target
ranges should be used to determine salaries for individuals appointed as AST/AR.
Lecturers: $45,000 - $65,000
Senior Lecturers/Artists-in-Residence: $ 55,000 - $75,000
These are target ranges. Departments are not required to change salaries immediately to
move them into the target ranges, although over time they are advised to do so. These
ranges are based on current salaries paid in H&S as well as objective salary data
compiled by the Department of Labor for institutions of higher education in the San
Francisco Bay Area. They may change from year to year to reflect changes in the rates
paid and/or the survey data. Generally, individuals with more directly relevant
experience should be paid more than individuals with less experience; market factors may
also be taken into account.
The California minimum wage required sets a minimum monthly salary for all exempt
AST/AR for $2600 (2006-07), regardless of FTE. AST/AR whose salaries do not meet
this minimum will be coded as non-exempt; departments will be required to track hours
worked by these employees as they do for all other non-exempt employees.
3.
Annual Salary Setting
The annual salary setting process for AST/AR is described in the attached process map.
The process is used only for benefits-eligible AST/AR. All salaries and FTE % for
benefits-eligible AST/AR are reviewed by the Senior Associate Dean and the Faculty
Affairs Office, and then approved by the Senior Associate Dean.
Specific guidelines for merit-based increases, necessary reports and forms, and timelines
are provided to departments by the Faculty Affairs Office in the HSDO.
