UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS FROM NORTH AMERICA & CANADA Thank you for your enquiry regarding entry to the Veterinary Degree Course at the University of Glasgow. I have detailed some basic information but if you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact us. The University of Glasgow The University was established in 1451 and is the fourth oldest university in the UK. One of the larger universities in the UK with approximately 21,000 students, we have four colleges, each bringing together the research and teaching expertise of a number of schools and institutes. The colleges are The College of Arts, The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, The College of Science and Engineering and The College of Social Sciences. Our Veterinary School is one of only four Veterinary Schools in Europe to gain the prized American Veterinary Medicine Association accreditation. How to Apply North American and Canadian students should make their applications through VMCAS and complete details can be found on their website http://www.vmcas.org. Once you have submitted your application to VMCAS, this will be sent to us. Academic transcripts are now part of the VMCAS application and do not need to be sent to us separately. We do not require anything else from you. The University of Glasgow does not require a supplemental application or an additional processing application. Please note applications are due by 1pm on 2nd October 2014 for entry in September 2015. Entry Requirements We consider applicants from North America and Canada who have completed a minimum of 3 years of a pre-veterinary or science degree from a North American or Canadian University. We would expect a cumulative average of 70% or a GPA around 3.4. Subjects studied must include Organic Chemistry with lab (2 semesters), Biology and either Mathematics or Physics. We also require some practical experience in an animal related environment and with a veterinary surgeon. The choice of additional courses is left to the student, however since the curriculum of a professional school is extremely specialised, students are encouraged to make their college years as broad as possible by selecting in the humanities and social sciences. All course requirements must be met prior to matriculation. Exposure to practice, research or other areas of veterinary medicine is essential and should be documented. Guaranteed Accommodation Accommodation is guaranteed for all first year international students provided they apply by 22nd August upon the year of entry. Interviews Interviews will be held around February time for prospective applicants at various locations in the USA. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS In addition to the academic standard detailed, evidence of motivation is required. It is essential that applicants to the Veterinary Course have a minimum of 6 weeks work experience with at least 2 weeks with a veterinary surgeon and have had hands on experience with farm animals. We look for knowledge of the veterinary profession, and for experience of and contact with a variety of animals, e.g. 1. Attendance with a veterinary surgeon(s) (companion animal and farm animal). Minimum of two weeks or occasional days/weekends over a substantial period. 2. Experience of working on a dairy farm. 3. Assisting on a sheep farm at lambing time. 4. Experience working with horses, e.g. at riding stables. 5. Experience of working in a boarding kennel or cattery. 6. Visit to an abattoir (not essential). 7. Any additional relevant experience, e.g. zoo, wildlife park or laboratory etc. The broader this experience the more favourably will any application be viewed.
