Bethel’s Technology Orientation Instructor: Kathleen Quick Gunther Ten Clock Hours Bethel School District School–Based, District Wide End-Course Registration Prerequisites: None Course Description: This orientation course is designed to introduce and/or remind Bethel Staff about necessary technology that is available to serve many purposes. The course will provide instruction on how to use network file services, the communications platform, the technology work order system, various network resources, as well as what are our common software titles, subscription services, and current technology policies. Required Components Teacher Skill Tasks (All tasks are required) • Knowledge of district log in protocol (staff and student). • Operation of network file services for backup and transfer (staff and student). • Knowledge of recommended back up procedures. • Thorough overview of Bethel’s communication platform, Google Apps (Gmail/Google Video Chat), for electronic communications. • Knowledge of network-based technology services to obtain aid and/or technology service. • Introduction to the common software applications on all Bethel computers. • Overview of the My Bethel portal and the resources contained within, both subscription and district developed. • Overview of Bethel’s Network Policies, including the Network Use Agreement, Internet Code of Conduct, publishing of student work/pictures, hold harmless agreement for equipment, and district checkout procedures. TASK 1: Using Google Apps - Gmail, send an email to the instructor that has formatted text beyond the default and includes a file attachment. TASK 2: Using Google Apps – Calendar, add an event, invite the instructor, and modify the date or time of the event. TASK 3: Using Google Apps – Docs, create a document with basic formatting and then share it to the instructor. The file will then be posted to teacher’s website (i.e. SWIFT). TASK 4: Construct a basic classroom web site for communication with parents and/or students, including calendaring and up-to-date announcements. Email instructor link to the site for evaluation. TASK 5: Run completely through back up procedures, with verification from the instructor that data is in at least three locations. TASK 6: Using Google Video Chat, conduct a video chat with a Bethel colleague discussing Bethel’s options for Technology help. Course Objectives: The learner will meet all the learning objectives of the Required Components listed above as well as complete all of the Teacher Skill Tasks. Below are the expectations for each objective: The learner will be able to… • Log into all Bethel Network based products, as needed by job title. • Recognize and utilize network file servers for transfer and storage of files. • Properly back up vital data to more than one location. • Use Gmail and Google Video Chat to effectively communicate with other Bethel staff in various ways. • Properly obtain technology help via Technology Service Request (TSR), help line, emergency line, or Technology TOSAs. • Recognize and operate common software applications. • Access all of the resources available through the My Bethel portal, including classroom web pages, Atomic Learning for just-in-time training tutorials, Google Apps for communication, etc. • Consider and understand all of Bethel’s Network and Technology related policies. Teacher Skill Tasks and Objectives The learner will be able to… TASK 1: Google Apps - Gmail • Create an email message and address it to the instructor using the Bethel Directory. • Format the text in the email message beyond just the default text. • Add a file attachment to the message. • Send the message. TASK 2: Google Apps – Calendar • Add an event to the calendar and invite the instructor • Modify the event (date, time, etc.). TASK 3: Google Apps - Docs • Create a basic document, and properly save it. • Transfer the file to Google Docs and share it to the instructor. • Demonstrate understanding of the difference between comment, view, edit and owner. TASK 4: Classroom Web Page as a Communication Tool • Design web pages for communicating with the audience of parents, students, colleagues in mind. • Include events in the calendar or link a Google Calendar. • Include up to date announcements and/or homework. • Develop a welcome page. TASK 5: Back Up Procedures • Using either real or simulated data, back up data to staff folder on network file server. • Using either real or simulated data, back up data to “other” location (CD, DVD, jump/flash drive, external hard drive, etc.) • Verify that data is in 3 separate locations. TASK 6: Google Video Chat • Start a video chat using the Bethel Directory. • Conduct a two-way conversation showing understanding of Bethel options for technology support. • Conclude and exit the chat properly. Note: The learner will need to install the Google Video Chat plug-in if not already installed. Student Expectations: Students will be expected to complete all six Teacher Skill Tasks to demonstrate mastery of the course objectives. All students enrolled in this course are required to be present for the full 10 hours of instruction. Students will sign in for each class session attended. This can be done in print, on-line, email, at a staff meeting, retreat, Learning Improvement Day, or annual Technology Fair.
