Señora Fulmer’s 5th Grade Classroom procedures:
Speaking in Spanish: In this classroom we will speak Spanish as much as possible. You
will receive a paper with important phrases to help you. When asking to use something or
go to the bathroom, use this paper to help you until you are able to remember it. It’s
almost like you are in another country and this is your survival guide. This is the main
way that you will be able to absorb the language. Complicated grammar points and notes
taking will sometimes be given in English to facilitate understanding.
Noise Levels: Please refer to the “Noise Level Chart” during all activities in the
classroom. This chart explains what level your voice should be at during activities.
Food and drink: There is no food or drink allowed in this classroom. The only exception
is when the teacher gives out food or drink, or when we are having a class celebration.
Late to class: Please nock lightly on the door and wait outside of the door until it is a
good time to let you in. I will not let you enter the classroom if it is a time that will
disrupt the learning of other students. When you do enter the classroom, sit at your desk
and put your pass on top of your desk. I will come by to check it when it is an appropriate
time.
Beginning of class: When you enter the classroom, please make sure you have an
empezamos and a pencil. Please go quietly to your desk and begin your empezamos. Now
is the time to get a pencil, paper, or sharpen your pencil if needed. Please do all of those
things in the first two minutes of class. Take note of any special messages on the board,
assignments that are posted, and homework that is posted. If there was homework the
night before or any thing else to hand in, please have it on your desk and ready to be
checked or collected.
End of class: At the end of class, Sra. Fulmer will turn off the lights. There is no talking
when the lights are off. Open your folder to the stamp chart and place it on your desk.
Students who are the quietest will get their chart stamped first and line up at the door.
Lining up: Stand facing forward, straight and silent. If you cannot stand in line according
to my expectations, you will be asked to sit back down until your teacher comes. I will
then let your teacher know what happened.
When you need a pencil: If you come into class without a pencil, please get one before
being seated. If you realize during instructional time that you do not have a pencil raise 2
fingers and wait for my approval to go get a pencil. Please do this quickly and quietly
without disrupting other classmates.
Getting Quiet: When Sra. Fulmer claps once, students join in so that we clap 3 times.
When you hear the clapping, you stop what you are doing, stop talking, eyes on Sra.
Fulmer. After 3 claps, you immediately stop clapping and are silent and waiting for my
next instructions. If you continue to clap you will receive a warning.
Seeking help: The procedure for seeking help is as follows:
-If you wish to speak, raise the index finger
-If you wish to leave your seat (not to visit a friend), raise two fingers
-If you need my help, raise three fingers
-If you need to go to the bathroom or nurse, cross two fingers
-I will respond with a thumbs-up if you may do what you have requested, or I will
respond with a all five fingers if right now is not a good time.
Using the bathroom/leaving the room: Going to the bathroom during class is a
privilege not a right. There are very few times that it is appropriate to go to the bathroom
during class. Please use the appropriate hand signal (2 fingers crossed) to ask to use the
bathroom. You should only ask to use the bathroom during work times (not during the
empezamos) and when all work is completed. Only one person may use the bathroom at a
time. The same goes for the nurse. Getting drinks is not allowed unless it is an obvious
emergency. When you are leaving the room, sign out and take the correct pass from the
wall.
Collecting Papers: When collecting papers, the papers should be placed in a pile and put
at the end of the desks facing closer to the front of the room. I will then collect the piles.
Abesnt?: When absent, come to this folder and check for your make-up work. It will
have the date on it and all papers that were completed will be stapled together so you
only need one packet. Please ask another student in the class for help during partner or
group work time before asking me if you don’t understand.
Getting Into Groups: The group that you are placed in is not up for negotiation. There
are basic rules of how to work in a group:
1. You are responsible for your own job and the results of the group.
2. If you have a question, ask the supporting members of your group.
3. You must be willing to help if a supporting member asks you for help.
4. If no one can agree, then come up with a question to ask me and chose
someone to raise three fingers for help.
Emergency Procedures: If the fire alarm rings, freeze where you are and look at the
teacher. Do not scream or yell. Wait for me to get my classroom keys and emergency bag
and I will give you a hand signal to evacuate the classroom. Make a line outside of the
classroom just like you would to enter the classroom. Wait for me to lock the classroom
door and signal that the line may follow me. The line must be silent. We will exit the
building. When we reenter the classroom, please return to your seat and continue any
work that we were doing before the alarm.
