AMVETS LADIES AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP DEPARTMENT OF TENNESSEE

GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION:
The AMVETS LADIES AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP has been established to recognize and reward
need, academic achievement and potential of students; to stimulate recruitment of wellqualified candidates’ involvement of a Department Service Organization and its members.
The SCHOLARSHIP will be judged by the Scholarship Committee during the Spring State
Executive Committee Meeting. All scholarship applications must be submitted no later than
March 1.
A SCHOLARSHIP of at least $500.00 will be awarded to a deserving applicant.
ELIGIBILITY:
A. The applicant must be a member of AMVETS or AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, be a
son/daughter, stepson/stepdaughter, or grandchild of a member of AMVETS or AMVETS
Ladies Auxiliary. Any applicant (or the member who is their ‘sponsor’) must be a
member for at least one year.
B. The applicant must be entering their first year of undergraduate study, or re-enrolling as
an adult in an undergraduate program at an accredited college, university, nursing or
vocational school, accompanied by a copy of the letter of acceptance from said school.
REQUIREMENTS:
A. The applicant must submit a paper of no more than five hundred (500) words, nor less
than two hundred (200) words about himself/herself. It should include past
accomplishments, career and educational goals and objectives for their future.
B. Three (3) letters of recommendation, one of which may be the faculty advisor (excluding
family members). Contact information (address, phone number and email address) for
the author of each letter of recommendation are REQUIRED.
C. Copy of his/her official high school or college transcript.
D. Proof of eligibility and a copy of AMVETS/AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary member ship card.
E. Completed copy of the application form.
F. Signed copy of the Privacy Act form.
G. A copy of the transcript for the semester in which the scholarship monies were used
must be provided to the Department Scholarship Officer within 50 days of the end-ofsemester. If the transcript is not provided, and/or if the applicant does not maintain a
2.0 (C average), the Auxiliary may request that the scholarship monies be returned,
and/or that the applicant be banned from applying for future scholarships.

JUDGING CRITERIA:
Criteria for judging the elements of the candidates’ dossier will be considered in the following
manner:
1. PERSONALITY – 15% – Three (3) letters of reference as to the student potential in
regards to specialized field.
2. SCHOLARSHIP – 35% – Scholastic transcript of semester average for all courses taken in
the previous year or years with explanation of grading system.
3. AIM – 20% – The student paper (maximum five hundred (500) words).
4. NEED – 30% – The information on the application form regarding the financial status of
the applicant, the family and the actual need of the applicant.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
The application must be submitted to the Department Scholarship Chairman
and copied to the Department Secretary by March 1.
