Frequently Asked Questions from Students and Guests about the College of Social Work’s Graduation Ceremony Q: A: How long does the ceremony last? The graduation ceremony typically lasts between 1 – 1.5 hours. Q: A: Are guests free, and what is the availability of seating for guests? All guests are free and tickets are not required. Please note that seating is limited and not guaranteed. Some guests may have to stand for the entire ceremony, which can be challenging for children, individuals with handicaps, and older adults. Doors will open for social work convocation seating approximately 45 minutes before the start of the convocation ceremony. Early arrival is recommended. Q: A: Is there a graduation rehearsal? No, we do not have a graduation rehearsal. Graduates are advised to be at the Park Building on time to receive instructions. College of Social Work personnel will be available to guide them through the ceremony. Q: A: What is the availability of parking at the ceremony site? President’s Circle will be congested and parking is limited. We highly recommend parking at Rice-Eccles Stadium and taking the shuttle or walking to Kingsbury Hall. Q: A: Will the graduation ceremony be canceled if it is raining? Graduation will NOT be canceled if it is raining. Graduates will be directed to meet in the basement of Kingsbury Hall, entering through the West door. Q: A: What is the availability of handicapped seating? Please contact Delva Hommes (delva.hommes@socwk.utah.edu or 801-581-4239) to reserve seating for guests with handicaps. Upon arrival at Kingsbury Hall, please ask the ushers to direct you to the appropriate seating. Individuals with handicaps may be accompanied by one able-bodied person. We recommend arriving early if guests need handicapped seating. Q: A: Where is Kingsbury Hall located? Kingsbury Hall is located on the University of Utah Campus at 1395 East Presidents Circle. Click here for a map. Q: A: Where can I meet my graduate after the ceremony is finished? The last event in the ceremony is the recessional, in which all participants (the dean, the faculty, and the graduates) leave their seating area. Graduates will proceed all the way out of the building and can meet their guests in front of Kingsbury Hall. Q: A: Will I be able to take a close-up photograph or videotape a graduate as he/she walks across the stage? The front row of seats is reserved for guests that would like to come up and take a picture, then immediately return to their seats. Q: A: Are there used regalia available? Some students have donated their regalia, so there are a few to loan out. Of course, the supply is limited and is loaned on a first-come basis. Please contact Delva Hommes (801-581-4239 or delva.hommes@socwk.utah.edu) to check out a cap and gown. Donated regalia are greatly appreciated. Q: A: Will I receive my diploma at the ceremony? You will not receive your actual diploma at the graduation ceremony. It will be mailed to you after grades for the semester are posted to your official record. Q: A: Are there additional instructions for graduates that may be helpful? After pictures at the Park Building, the graduates will line up in alphabetical order within their degree class. Those sitting on the stage and/or participating in the program will be grouped separately and walk at the end of the graduates. Please stay in the alphabetical order while seated at Kingsbury Hall, as there is no room or time to change order. Graduates should sit next to each other and not leave an empty seat, as space is limited and the empty rows will be opened up to guests. Once you are in your row, please remain standing until the dean invites you to be seated. Diploma professional picture – Please be prepared to stop and pose for the photographer when you receive your diploma. You will be emailed photo proofs and ordering instructions, however you are no under no obligation to purchase the photos. Q: A: What kind of clothing should I wear underneath my gown? Suggested attire for women includes a dark dress or dark trousers, and dark shoes. Flat shoes (no slippers) or shoes with short heels are recommended for safety purposes. Do not wear green on the outside of your gown, as it will interfere with the photographer’s green screen. Q: A: On what side of my cap do I wear my tassel? You will wear the tassel on the right side of the cap. After you receive your diploma, you may move it to the left side of the cap. Q: A: Can my guests come to the Park Building and take pictures?
