Ajuga School INTEGRATION POLICY for Primary School Students Student: School: Start Date: Proposed Exit Date: Ajuga CT : Year Ajuga CT Name Email Name Email Name Email : Year Ajuga CT : Year www.ajuga-s.schools.nsw.edu.au ajuga-s.school@det.nsw.edu.au Background Ajuga provides an integration program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who have a severe emotional disturbance. There are four primary and three high school classes, organised according to stage groups. Each class caters for up to seven students and is staffed by a Classroom Teacher and a School Learning Support Officer. The Program The main focus of the Ajuga Program is to provide extensive support to successfully return students to school. Students usually attend for six school terms. During this time students continue to attend their mainstream (home) school, initially for one day per week and then gradually increasing to full time over the enrolment period. The program has an emphasis on working closely with home school staff and parents/carers to facilitate students’ attendance with minimal difficulties. Our experienced executive staff, Classroom Teachers and SLSOs are available to assist integrating students and their schools with individualised programs. This assistance can be negotiated and aims to improve educational and social outcomes for students, and includes team teaching, development of student support plans, and 1-1 learning and excursion support. Responsibilities of AJUGA SCHOOL Coordinate an integration planning meeting with home school staff during first 4 weeks of student enrolment Provide weekly feedback to the student’s mainstream school via fax, phone or email Visit the mainstream school 2-3 times per term Complete two full reports on the student’s progress per year and provide copies to parent/care and home school staff Arrange regular review meetings to discuss the students’ progress with all stakeholders Advise mainstream school of all long and short suspensions Responsibilities of MAINSTREAM SCHOOL Provide information regarding the students behaviour and learning prior to enrolment Provide weekly feedback on student progress to Ajuga via fax, phone or email Visit Ajuga at least once during the 18 month placement Attend review meetings and provide written progress reports Increase the number of days of the student’s integration during the 18 month placement Advise Ajuga of long and short suspensions Information 1. A student’s weekly integration back into their mainstream school is integral to the purpose of the Ajuga Program. For this reason students must be enrolled and attending a mainstream school. Student records remain with the mainstream school. The School Counsellor file is held at Ajuga School. 2. Student’s entering into Year 7 must attend their mainstream high school full-time for the first two weeks to get to know school routines and staff members. Students then commence at Ajuga on a 3:2 split, that is, three days at Ajuga and two at the mainstream school, unless negotiated otherwise. 3. A student’s integration must be gradually increased during the 18 month placement. The increase in the number of integration days can occur through the review process or through discussions between the schools. 4. Reviews are held at least twice per year with parents/carers, mainstream school staff and Ajuga school staff participating in the process. High school students are invited to participate in their reviews where appropriate. 5. Student’s progress on their integration days is linked to the Ajuga School Welfare and Discipline Policy. Mainstream schools are required to give Ajuga feedback each week on a student’s progress via the completion of an Ajuga Point Sheet (refer to Appendices) or the mainstream school’s own recording sheet. Behaviour at the mainstream school is linked to the gaining of rewards and advancement through the level system at Ajuga and so it is imperative that these progress sheets are returned promptly by fax or email following the integration day(s). 6. When a student’s integration is at 3 days and they are about to enter their final (6 th term) of the program, mainstream schools are eligible to apply for Integration Funding Support. 7. At the completion of the 18 month placement, mainstream schools may negotiate an extension if further support is required and likely to be successful. If full time mainstream placement is still felt to be inappropriate after this extension it is the responsibility of the mainstream school, with the support of Ajuga, to seek an alternative placement.
