Honors Research Grants
Deadlines: October 5, 2010

Each year, Honors Research Grants of up to $1,000 each are awarded to
senior and junior Commonwealth Honors College students through a competitive
application process. Students must submit a proposal outlining their project
accompanied by the completed application endorsed by their faculty sponsor. Every
recipient is asked to present his or her work at the statewide Undergraduate
Research Conference. There are three application rounds for these fellowships each
year.
Eligibility: Applicants must be third year Commonwealth Honors College
students planning to pursue honors research and thesis/project in their senior year.

Research Assistant Fellowships
Deadline: October 5, 2010
To further support and encourage students to participate in laboratory
research, scholarly activity or service learning, Commonwealth Honors College
offers working fellowships of up to $1,000 for work done under the direct
supervision of a faculty mentor. Spring deadline is for freshman and sophomores
applying for fall semester. Fall deadline is for sophomores and juniors applying for
spring semester. Honors students interested in applying must make arrangements
with a faculty sponsor. Applications are accepted in April for the following fall, and
in October for disbursement during the spring.
Eligibility: Commonwealth Honors College students in good academic standing
(i.e., minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2) in any discipline who are sophomores or
juniors in the academic year 2009-2010.
Research Assistant Fellowship Application
Center for Research on Families: Undergraduate Honors Thesis/Capstone
Award
Deadline: March 1, 2011
Two awards in the amount of $500 each will be given to recognize and
provide support to fund the honors thesis research of an outstanding University of
Massachusetts Amherst undergraduate student focused on family issues.
Eligibility: Senior undergraduate student in good standing whose honors
thesis research or capstone experience is related to family research.

CRF Family Research Assistantship Award
Deadline: March 1, 2011
Two assistantship awards in the amount of $3000 each annually will be given
to undergraduate students who exhibit the potential to make outstanding
contributions to the field of family research and seek further mentoring in this area.
These students will each assist a single faculty member with his/her research on
families.

Alan L. and Carol S. LeBovidge Undergraduate Research Scholarship
Deadline: Early April 2011
This scholarship was established by Alan LeBovidge ´64 (economics) and his
wife Carol to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to do meaningful
research with a UMass Amherst faculty member. Student recipients receive a
stipend to support them for up to 10 hours per week during one semester of
substantive research assistance on a faculty research project.
Eligibility: Students must be nominated by the faculty member for whom
they will be providing research assistance. Faculty may only nominate one student
per year.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences Dean's Opportunity Scholarship
Deadline: Early March 2011
The SBS Dean's Opportunity Fund was created and is supported by
contributions from alumni of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Students
must be juniors with declared majors in the College of Social and Behavioral
Sciences. Candidates must also have a 3.5 GPA or above and 45 residential credits.
Qualified students automatically receive notification of eligibility early in the
spring semester. If you believe you are eligible, but did not receive an email
invitation, please contact Jackie Brousseau-Pereira at scholarships@sbs.umass.edu.

Merit Scholarship)

Social and Behavioral Sciences. Candidates must also have a 3.5 GPA or above and

Microcal Scholarship
Deadline: May 1, 2011
Provides two $2,500 scholarships to students majoring in the life sciences in
NSM; preference given to students from the Pioneer Valley.

C.D. Youngren Scholarship Fund
Deadline: May 1, 2011
This fund supports a stipend and laboratory expenses for an outstanding
NSM student engaged in a research opportunity during the summer of her/his
junior year and continuing through her/his senior year.

Junior Fellows Program
Deadline: Late April 2011
The year long Jr. Fellows Program supports the research of outstanding
seniors majoring in the life sciences. Each Jr. Fellow will receive a $1,000 award and
take part in a 1 credit course that will involve discussion of their research projects
as well as other topics in modern cell and molecular biology, neuroscience,
biomedicine, and research ethics. Junior Fellows play a central role in organizing the
UMass Undergraduate Life Science Research Symposium in the spring semester.
Each Fall and Spring semesters will conclude with a public poster or seminar
session.
Eligibility: Students eligible to apply to the Jr. Fellows Program include life
science majors in their junior year with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or
better.

Honors Dean's Award
Deadline: March 1, 2011
Ten annual awards of $500 each are made to senior Commonwealth Honors
College students based on the excellence of their thesis or project.

Cooke Family Fund Scholarship
Deadline: March 1, 2011
This award is endowed by the Cooke family in memory of family members,
several of whom were alumni of the University- Theodore F. Cooke’, Sr. ’01, Robert
G. Cooke ’25, Dorothy Cooke Robbins ’28, Theodore F. Cooke, Jr. ’34, Helen Cooke
Rudzinski Hough, and Alma Cooke Kendall Bassett. Recipients of the cash prize of
$1,000 are selected from among senior Commonwealth Honors College students
who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, successful completion
of research, and significant university or community service.
Eligibility: Senior Commonwealth Honors College Students in good standing
who have shown outstanding achievement, including the successful completion of
research in the student’s major, and have demonstrated significant university or
community service.

This is a great opportunity to take courses and/or work in the lab over the
summer. You must fill out your FAFSA by the March deadline, and also complete the

Maureen Flanagan Scholarship Endowment
Deadline: March 31, 2011
This endowment is to establish scholarships for undergraduate students,
with preference for women, who have some financial need. The scholarships will
offer students opportunities to study abroad, conduct research, summer internships,
alternative spring breaks, community service, or other initiatives that complement
and enhance the chosen course of study of the students selected. Student applicants
must prepare a one-page proposal, which describes their initiative and estimated
costs, by the deadline.
