Faculty of Arts Student Representation on Committees and Faculty Council Committee Details:
1. ARTS FACULTY COUNCIL
(35 Undergrad Members)
-Meetings scheduled for 2007-08:
October 11 and November 29, 2007 and March 20 and May 22, 2008 all 2:00 PM; Council Chamber, University Hall
-Under The Universities Act, the Arts Faculty Council is the legislative body of the Faculty of Arts and has responsibility for
programs, courses, examinations and course results, admission requirements, and academic standing, subject only to the control of the
General Faculties Council of the University. In practice, the full Council normally meets four times a year. Special meetings may,
however, be called by the Dean to debate issues of concern.
2. ARTS FACULTY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
(4 Undergrad Members)
-Meeting Dates: September 27 and November 22, 2007, Feb 7, March 6, and May 12, 2008. All meetings start at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
-The Executive Committee of Arts Faculty Council is the ongoing executive body of the larger Council and is empowered to act
between meetings of the Council and to carry recommendations to it for debate, decision or referral. Its actions are regularly reported
to Council for information or ratification. The Executive Committee also functions as the Faculty's Academic Appeals Committee and
as Council's Nominations Committee. The Dean may seek its advice on any matter of concern to the Faculty.
3. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
(8 Undergrad Members)
-Meeting Dates September 26, and October 24, 2007; March 26, and April 25, 2008
-The Academic Affairs committee is the working arm of the Faculty responsible for the assessment of new program and curriculum
proposals. It examines not only the structure of each new proposal but also more general issues such as the relationship of a new
proposal to existing programs. It may also be called upon to review existing programs and is expected to recommend change and
experimentation where a need for theses is indicated. It will also oversee the regulations governing admissions and academic
standing. The Committee also considers all proposals for changes to the University Calendar.
4. HONORS COMMITTEE
(2 Undergrad Members)
-The committee will meet on the following dates from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Friday, October 26, March 28, 2007; Friday, April 25, and Friday, May 16, 2008
-Review proposals for new honors programs and for changes to existing honors programs in the Faculty; Review proposals for
changes to the regulations governing honors programs and initiate such proposals; Assist the Student Programs Office in dealing with
student appeals; Recommend approval of lists of graduands to Executive Committee; Adjudicate the competition for honors awards;
Meet as required with departmental Honors representatives; Advise and assist the Dean on all relevant matters; Reports to Arts
Council at least annually.
5. LIBRARY COMMITTEE
(1 Undergrad Member)
-The library committee will hold regularly scheduled meetings during the Fall and Winter terms, and other meetings as necessary.
6. TEACHING AND LEARNING COMMITTEE
(3 Undergrad Members)
-Every 3rd Wednesday of each month from 1:30 - 3:00 pm.
-If an elected member is absent from three consecutive meetings or is frequently absent without a reason satisfactory to the remaining
members of the Committee, the Chair shall declare the position vacant.
-The Arts Teaching and Learning Committee will: Explore ways to promote a culture of discussion and inquiry around teaching in the
Faculty, and to foster innovative and collaborative teaching. Explore ways to promote a productive relationship between research and
teaching in the Faculty. Recommend to FEC and Faculty Council procedures that would promote teaching excellence and ensure that
it is considered and rewarded equally with research excellence. Receive regular reports from the Arts Resource Center (ARC) about its
services and programming and offer advice on these reports. Maintain liaison with other committees and units in the University, such
as the GFC Committee on the Learning Environment (CLE) and University Teaching Service (UTS), with a view to coordinating
activities in the Faculty of Arts with broader initiatives, and developing programs and initiatives that improve the quality of teaching
and the undergraduate experience in our Faculty.
7. UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING AWARDS COMMITTEE
(3 Undergrad Members)
-This committee meets to assess applications for the Faculty's Undergraduate Teaching Awards, including those for sessional and
graduate students, and nominates faculty for the General Faculties Council's Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate
Teaching.
