2015 Humanities Awards Nomination Form Dan Shilling Public Humanities Scholar Award Purpose Given annually by Arizona Humanities, this award recognizes a humanities scholar who has distinguished him/herself by enhancing public understanding of the role that the humanities play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The award honors Dan Shilling's many years and contributions as Arizona Humanities’ executive director from March 1984 to December 2003. The Arizona Humanities Board established the award to mark Dan's legacy, reflect the esteem in which he is held, and recognize Dan's own respect for scholarship. Arizona Humanities supports public programming in the humanities that promotes understanding of human thoughts, actions, creations, and values. We work with museums, libraries, and other cultural and educational organizations to bring humanities programs to residents throughout Arizona. Our mission is to build a just and civil society by creating opportunities to explore our shared human experiences through discussion, learning and reflection. Criteria Nominators should address how the nominee meets the following criteria: 1. Sustained (3-5 years) research, creative activity, and service to humanities efforts in Arizona; 2. Cultivates public engagement with one or more of the humanities disciplines; 3. Evidence of the scholar’s impact on diverse issues and/or communities. How to Nominate A nomination may be made by any individual or organization, and individuals may nominate themselves. Previous nominees are welcome to reapply. To nominate a Public Humanities Scholar, submit the following items: 1. Nomination Form (attached) 2. Letter of Support - describing the accomplishments and specific contributions that qualify the nominee for the award in accordance with the criteria. 3. Nominee Bio (100 words or less) 4.
