Oberlin College
Bonner Scholars Program
Service and Learning Contract
I, ________________________________________, a Bonner Scholar at Oberlin College, agree to the following
terms and responsibilities during the 2006-2007 academic year.
1. I will represent the Oberlin College Bonner Scholars Program, exemplifying the highest standards of service and
upholding all college academic and social standards as outlined in the Oberlin College Student Handbook.
2. Academic Year Service
A. I will complete community service for an average of 10 hours per week during the academic year. I will
work at least 5 hours per week at a non-profit agency that serves the greater Lorain County performing
direct community service activities. I will complete a Community Learning Agreement on the Bonner
Web-based Reporting System and submit it to the Bonner Scholars Program Director with my signature
and my site supervisor’s signature by September 15 (Fall, 2006) and February 15 (Spring, 2007). I will
begin my service when my Community Learning Agreement is submitted to the Bonner Scholars Program
Director. I understand that I will forfeit my first Bonner stipend ($93.75) if my Community Learning
Agreement is more than five days overdue.
B. I will verify attendance at my service site by completing Hour Logs on the Bonner Web-based Reporting
System and submitting it to the Bonner Scholars Program Director with my signature and my site
supervisor’s signature on Timecard Fridays (bi-weekly). After my Hour Log is submitted I will sign my
timecard. I understand that if my Hour Log is late or incomplete my timecard will not be processed until
the Timecard Friday after I submit the complete documents. I understand that I will forfeit my Bonner
stipend ($93.75) for any Hour Logs and timecards that are not submitted by the end of each semester.
C. I will meet with my site supervisor to discuss my community service schedule. (This includes whether I
will work when classes are not in session). I will also notify my site supervisor (in advance, if possible) of
any necessary absence or tardiness. I understand that I am responsible for the commitment that I make to
my site and therefore will give my supervisor and my co-workers the utmost respect and dedication.
D. I will meet with my site supervisor at the end of each semester to evaluate my progress and discuss my
plans for the following semester. After the meeting, I will submit a Site Evaluation to the Bonner Scholars
Director. I will also follow-up with my site supervisor to verify that s/he has submitted a signed Scholar
Evaluation to the Bonner Scholars Program Director. I understand that my Bonner Book Stipend ($300)
will be delayed until both evaluations are submitted to the Bonner Scholars Program Director.
E. I understand that I will be placed on probation from the Bonner Scholars Program for one semester if I do
not complete community service for an average of 10 hours per week during the academic year. These
hours can include a combination of direct service hours with a non-profit agency (at least 5 hours per
week) and indirect service hours at Bonner Enrichment Activities and community service related campus
organizations. If I cannot complete my service hours, I will meet with the Bonner Scholars Program
Director to discuss my situation and develop an alternate plan to complete my hours. If I falsify
information about my service or forge signatures on any Bonner documents (Community Learning
Agreement, Hour Log, Evaluation) I will be dismissed from the Bonner Scholars Program.
3. Enrichment Activities
A. I understand that the Bonner Scholars Program includes community service and Enrichment Activities that
are strategically scheduled during my years in the program to enhance my advancement through the
Student Developmental Model (5Es). These activities incorporate the Bonner Common Commitments and
Bonner Skills to assist my growth as a social change agent.
I will fully participate in all Enrichment Activities of the Bonner Scholars Program including:

*The date(s) of each Enrichment Activity will be determined by the Bonner Scholars Program Director and
presented the Bonner Scholars at least 30 days before the event.
B. I understand that the Enrichment Activities help build the Bonner Scholars Program’s community at
Oberlin College and are an important part of being a Bonner Scholar. I also understand that the time spent
participating in Enrichment Activities counts toward my Bonner indirect service hours and I can add the
hours to my Hour Log.
C. I will notify the Bonner Scholars Program Director in advance if I am unable to attend an Enrichment
Activity. For each requirement that is not fulfilled I will receive a $100 deduction from the $1,600 Loan
Reduction Award. For each missed All Bonner Meeting, Class Meeting, or Retreat I will receive a $25
deduction from the $1,600 Loan Reduction Award. I understand that “make-up” activities are not

than three required Enrichment Activities (this includes more than three absences at the All Bonner
Meetings, Class Meetings, Retreats AND more than three absences at the other Enrichment Activities).
E. As a replacement Bonner Scholar, I understand that I am only eligible to receive the Bonner Scholarship
for the remaining term of the student I am replacing. I am responsible for completing the Enrichment
Activities that are required after I am accepted to the Bonner Scholars Program, including at least one fulltime summer service. I also understand that the Loan Reduction Award will be calculated by subtracting
$125 per missed semester from the maximum award of $1,600.
4. Summer Service
A. I will participate in the Bonner Scholars Program’s Summer Service (280 hours) for two summers. I
understand that when all required documents are submitted I will receive a Summer Living Stipend (up to
$1,000) and a Summer Earning Stipend (up to $1,500) both summers.
B. I understand that I will not receive a Summer Living Stipend unless I submit a Summer Living Stipend
Request by the first week of May. If I complete the Rising Senior Stipend Request by the first week of May
during my junior year, I am eligible for a $500 Rising Senior Stipend for summer service. I will not receive
an Earning Stipend if it is my third summer of service.
C. I understand that I will not receive my Summer Earning Stipend unless I submit the following document:
-Community Learning Agreement*
-Hour Log (documenting 280 hours of service)*
-Site Evaluation
-Scholar Evaluation*
-Receipts
*Must be signed by the site supervisor and Bonner Scholar.
I have read the following statements and certify by my signature that I agree to and will honor all obligations to the
Bonner Scholars Program Service and Learning Agreement. I understand that if I do not fulfill my obligations to
this contract, I will jeopardize my participation in the Bonner Scholars Program and as a result I will be placed on
probation for one semester. While on probation I will forfeit my Bonner Scholarship. If I continue not to fulfill my
obligations to this contract after my participation is reinstated, I will be dismissed from the Bonner Scholars
Program at Oberlin College.
