1 Directed/Independent Study Form Students in the MBMH Program follow a scholarly concentration of core and elective courses to fulfill the basic requirements. In addition, students are required to develop an individual project with the goal of in-depth study in the focus area. Since scholarly work in the humanities and arts tends to be much more individual compared to scientific research, each student will likely need to design his or her own project. Students will need to submit a project proposal for review and approval, and each student will need a faculty advisor/mentor for the project. Although the project need not be hypothesis-driven research, the pursuit of skill development alone (such as music lessons) would not qualify as independent study. All projects must demonstrate relevance to bioethics and/or medical humanities. The form of the project is flexible, but does require faculty or program director approval on the Form for Independent Study (see below). Presentation of the project may be required. In addition, presentation at a local, national or international meeting, such as the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities annual meeting, will be encouraged. 2 Masters Program: Bioethics and Medical Humanities Staff Contact:___ 974-5300__ FORM FOR INDEPENDENT STUDY Student Name____________________________________Semester_______Year____ Course Number__________________________________________________________ Core Courses Completed Grade Elective Courses Completed Grade ________________________________________________________________________ Briefly describe the goal of the proposed project and how it relates to the program Goal: Relationship: Describe how you plan to proceed and include the readings, films, other resources you expect to include.
