Programs for Graduates with Doctoral Degree in Study of Religion (Faculty Code:010107 ) I. Objectives 1、This faculty combines theory with practice and aims at training advanced religious professionals. It is required that doctoral graduates have deep-rooted and basic knowledge in religion and all kinds of special religious theories, can do religious research independently, and further more master one kind of the theory. After graduation the graduates can engage in research and teaching work on religion, performing practical work of religious administration and working on press publishing and foreign affairs, etc. II.Tendency 1. Study of Judaism 2. Study of Christianity 3. Study of Buddhism 4. Religious Comparison and Dialogue III. Duration of study Full-time doctoral graduates are required to normally study for three years in length, with the longest time not exceeding five years. For the master-doctor degree graduates, the time for study is normally five years, with the longest time not exceeding six years. IV. Total credits For doctoral graduates, 20 credits are required, and the master-doctor degree graduates are required 40 credits at lest. V. Curriculum & credits (see the curriculum in details) Compulsory courses: 1. 3 credits, Marxism theory 2. 3 credits, First foreign language; 2 credits, Second foreign language(if the graduate’s first language is English he\she can choose the second language as selective course; if the first language is not English he\she should choose the second language as the compulsory course, normally choose English course) 1 3. Faculty degree courses 3 credits, Research on the study of religion 5 credits , frontier- field academic lectures. (6 credits for the master-doctor degree 4. graduates) 5. Selective courses: The faculty of Judaic study: 3 credits, study of Jewish; 3 credits, study of Jewish mysticism The faculty of Christian study: 3 credits, Christian history; 3 credits, Christian theology The faculty of Buddhist study: 3 credits, Buddhist philosophy; 3 credits, study of the relationship between Confucianism and Taoism and Buddhism The faculty of the religious comparison & dialogue: 3 credits, Introduction of Chinese & western religious classics; 3 credits, study of the comparative methods of religion Graduates can select courses among the first-class courses for doctoral graduates (such as the doctoral courses in Chinese philosophy) 6. Supplementary courses Doctoral graduates with the same-level degree or non-major degree are required to select one post-graduate major course for their studies. The results are recorded in the personal files with no credits. VI. Mid-term assessments Our faculty performs mid-term assessment on doctoral graduates which is held in the third term. The master-doctor degree graduates will take a credential exam. The failed can not begin their dissertation writing, and should apply for postponing graduation. (1) Mid-term assessment consists of writing exam on basic theories and oral exam. (2) The credential exam will be held at the end of the second postgraduate term. The postgraduates who apply for master-doctor degree should fulfill the postgraduate courses and remarks of the major courses reach excellence. The postgraduates also are required to publish one paper on academic publications, based on which the applier should take a professional oral exam, and the qualified can study for the master-doctor degree. VII. Scientific research and degree dissertation Doctoral thesis is an important criterion for measuring a doctor's academic level and a faculty level in cultivating doctors. There are three important steps in the work of cultivating doctors: dissertation starting report, mid-phase progress report and the dissertation pre-defense. (1) Dissertation starting report is carried out 2 at the end of the third term, the doctoral graduates are required to report to the professor team on the thinking mode of the dissertation, the plan on the outline of the dissertation’ s writing and the preparation of the data; (2) mid-phase progress report is carried out during the fifth term, during which the doctoral graduates should report to the professor team about the rate of process, the difficulties and the further plan, declaring that either completing the dissertation in accordance with the plan or postponing the dissertation defense. (3) The dissertation pre-defense is that 3 months ahead of the applying for official dissertation defense, the doctoral graduates report to the tutor team on the result of the dissertation writing. Based on the tutor’s advice, the doctoral graduates perfect the dissertation. To guarantee the quality of the paper, the writing time should not be less than two years and for the master-doctor degree students, not less than three years. The achievements of the dissertation are shown in the form of at least one academic paper, published on academic publications at CSSCI, SCI and EI, with himself being the first author and Shandong University as the author's unit. The doctoral graduates also can publish two papers on other publications or take part in writing an academic work, at lest 30,000 words.
