Burgettstown Area Middle/High School
Advanced Placement Course Requirements
Burgettstown currently offers four College Board sponsored Advanced Placement
courses with the intention of providing an avenue for students who wish to challenge
themselves with college level rigor and potentially earn credits toward a post-secondary
program. In 2007-2008 the catalog of courses includes English Literature, United States
History, Biology, and German. AP classes afford students the opportunity to earn
weighted points toward grade point average and class rank. Beginning with the 20072008 academic year, enrollment in an AP course will also signify an agreement to
participate in the end of the year exam for college credit. The district (through Project
720 grant funds) will pay the examination fee for each student approved for enrollment in
any (all) of the four courses. When Project 720 funding ends, payment of examination
fees will become the responsibility of the student/family. The cost is significantly less
than a three credit college course.
Scheduling of an Advanced Placement course involves the following criteria:
1. Students must have met prerequisite course and grade requirements as
determined by department:
AP Biology:
Prerequisite courses: Biology w/Lab, Chemistry w/Lab and Anatomy and
Physiology
Grade of 85 or better required in each course
Instructor recommendation
AP US History:
Prerequisite courses: all required social studies prior to grade 12; senior
standing required
Grade of 85 or better required in each course
Instructor recommendation
AP English Literature:
Prerequisite courses: Honors English courses grades 9-11; Poetry
recommended elective
Grade of 85 or better required in each course
Instructor recommendation
German:
Prerequisite courses: German I-III
Grade of 85 or better required in each course
Instructor recommendation
2. Signed teacher and parent recommendations for each course. Signature sheets
must be completed for each course a student wishes to enroll in for the
academic year.
