Honors, Intensive, and Advanced Placement Course Application
Due February 27, 2015
Honors, Intensive, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are recommended for students who want to work hard
and improve their academic skills. AP and Honors courses earn students an additional grade point on their
transcripts for grades of C or higher. Any student who is eager to challenge him/herself will find these advanced
level courses exciting and satisfying.
These classes are a commitment and cannot be easily dropped from your schedule once enrolled. Honors,
Intensive, and AP classes require daily study time outside of class and completion of assignments and/or reading
over the summer break. Therefore, students cannot be enrolled in 3 or more advanced classes in one semester
without a meeting with their parent/guardian and academic counselor. Students who wish to drop an
advanced course will need to follow a progression of steps that will include a meeting with their
parent/guardian, course teacher, and academic counselor to determine whether a class change is merited.
Failing to complete the summer assignment is not sufficient grounds to drop an advanced class from your
schedule.
Each AP course culminates in an exam in May. A passing score on this exam may earn students college credit for
that course. All students are expected to take the exam. Students must pay a fee of up to $95.00 for each
exam they take however, many students qualify for a reduced fee--see your counselor for more information.
If you are interested in enrolling in advanced courses, please complete this application and letter of intent on a
separate sheet and turn it in to your counselor. Students who do not complete the letter of intent and
application may not be accepted into the advanced course(s) for which they wish to enroll. This is not a graded
assignment.
Advanced course considerations:
 Daily homework, including weekends and holidays
 Many advanced courses require that students complete a summer assignment be completed prior to
the first day of school in the fall
 Weekly essays, tests, and quizzes
 Daily attendance is crucial. Consider this carefully if
o You are frequently absent or tardy
o You participate in extra-curricular activities (sports, Link Crew, ASB, performing arts, etc.)
 Schedule changes out of an advanced class may only happen at the semester after a teacher, parent,
counselor meeting
