HUMANITIES SPRING FIELD TRIP STRATFORD THEATER FESTIVAL, ONTARIO March 20, 2014 Dear parents, Your child is invited to participate in a trip to Stratford, Ontario in Canada on Wednesday, April 30, to see the musical comedy Crazy for You. Crazy for You is a modern Broadway rendition of George and Ira Gershwin’s musical comedy Girl Crazy, written in 1930. George Gershwin, the celebrated classical and jazz composer known for his Rhapsody in Blue, is also known for using many music techniques we study in Honors Humanities including recitative, leitmotifs, fugue, syncopation, atonality, polytonality, polyrhythm, and tone rows. Experiencing a live theatre performance at this professional theatre festival will further help students appreciate this American composer. Participation is strictly optional. As a school-approved field trip, participating students are allowed to make up any work missed in other classes. For Honors Humanities students, this trip will count as one of the three required outside activity logs for second semester, and no write-up is required. The cost for the Stratford trip, including ticket and charter bus, is $65. Tickets are limited and on a first-come, firstserved basis. Interested students should bring cash or checks to their teacher beginning Friday, March 31. If paying with cash, please bring the correct change and submit the money in an envelope with the student’s name, English teacher’s name, and hour of English class written on the outside. Checks should be made out to PCCS and include the student’s name and his or her teacher’s name and hour in the memo line. We will establish a wait list, which will be used in the event someone has to cancel. We welcome the participation of parents/guardians and/or siblings over the age of 18 to accompany the group as chaperones for the same cost of $65. Chaperones need to send cash or a check with their student to reserve their spot(s) and complete a background check form before the trip. Chaperones will need proof of identity and citizenship in the form of either a passport or passport card. The bus will meet our group at the main entrance to Salem H.S. at 7:30 am. We are scheduled to depart from Salem at 7:45 am. School business form, permission slip, and emergency authorization sheet must be turned in to Mrs. Bates by Friday, April 18. Due to strict requirements regarding international travel, students must have either a passport or official birth certificate with raised seal AND one picture ID in order to enter Canada. Those who are not American citizens must bring passports, consular report of birth abroad, citizenship card, or naturalization certificate. Students without these items of identification will not be able to participate. We will arrive in Stratford around noon. Students may pack a lunch or purchase food in one of Stratford’s restaurants. We will meet the bus after lunch and drive to the Festival Theatre. The performance begins at 2:00 pm and ends at 5:00 pm. At the conclusion of the play, we will board the buses. We will stop for dinner at a fast food restaurant along the way and arrive at Salem about 10:00 pm. All students must arrange for their own transportation home from the school. Students may bring cameras, iPods, cell phones (not for use in the theatre), blankets, picnic baskets, and/or homework. Dress should be neat, but comfortable. Students will need to bring money for lunch and dinner and any souvenirs they wish to purchase at the Festival gift shop. American money will be accepted at all these locations. If a student must cancel at the last minute, please call Mrs. Bates on her cell at 734-330-6414 so a student from the waiting list can take the spot. If a replacement is found, the canceling student’s money will be refunded. The Stratford trip has been a wonderful tradition at PCEP for over 35 years. Please remember that we are visitors to Canada and represent our school, state, and country. All participants are expected to abide by all school rules while on the trip and conduct themselves at all times in a manner that is respectful and dignified. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher with any questions you may have regarding the trip. Shelley Bates English Teacher Salem High School
