As you may be aware, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and new
Royal Hospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.
With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria
Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current Royal
Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.
Gartnavel General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.
These changes mean your base may change after joining us and you will be informed as soon as possible prior to any change of base.

POST: SENIOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGERY

Applications are invited for the above 1-year post within the internationally renowned
Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, based within Glasgow Royal Infirmary, commencing
August 2015. Candidates who will be in possession of the FRCS(Plast), or equivalent specialty training accreditation at the time of commencing in post is desired, although not essential. Extensive experience in Burns and Plastic Surgery is a requirement (ST6/7 or above). A process exists to match training provision to the experience and training requirements of the successful candidate(s), who would be provided with an initial 6 month period of structured specialty training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. On the basis of educational and progress assessments, it is expected that candidates will then be provided with a further 6 month period of targeted training in a reconstructive subspecialisation of their choice. The successful candidate would be on the ST-grade on call rota throughout the post.
These posts are aimed at the senior trainee, from the U.K. or abroad, who seeks higher level training within one of the core sub-specialty remits of the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit.

Brief Description of Hospital:
No of beds: 49 in the Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit of Glasgow Royal
Infirmary (13 in the Burns unit, and 10 in the Plastic Surgery HDU), plus 18 day surgery and day of surgery admission trolleys.
Functions: All aspects of Plastic Surgery excluding Craniofacial Surgery
The Canniesburn Unit is based within Glasgow Royal Infirmary however outpatient clinics are also run in other major hospitals throughout the West of
Scotland, and the Unit contributes to several Supra-regional / National
Services.
The unit has research interests in burns care, microbiology, breast reconstruction techniques, laser imaging of blood flow, microvascular reconstruction, trauma reconstruction, nerve injury, head & neck cancer, and oncology. Local research links exist with the CRC Beatson Laboratories, the
Department of Anatomy & rehabilitation medicine (University of Glasgow), and the Department of Biomechanics (Strathclyde University). Professor Hart is the Stephen Forrest Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of
Glasgow, with national & international research links related to tissue engineering, peripheral nerve injury, and microsurgery. Other consultants are
Honorary Senior Lecturers.
The Work of the Department:
Plastic Surgery deals with many aspects of surgery, including cancer, trauma, congenital deformities, degenerative conditions and their sequelae.
It has close links with Orthopaedic Surgery (including lower limb trauma, paediatric services, and the National Brachial Plexus Service), Breast Surgery,
General Surgery, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Paediatric Surgery,
Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology. There is recognised expertise in microsurgical reconstruction, including that of the hand, upper and lower limbs as a result of trauma, burn injury, congenital malformations, and sarcoma.
Burns and Plastic Surgery is part of the Regional Services Directorate within
Greater Glasgow & Clyde Acute Division.

Term of Post:
This is a one year appointment.
Duties of Post:
Patient care in the Unit, increasing operative experience, attendance at relevant subspecialty clinics, participating in teaching programme (including the
International Flap Course, and Microsurgery Courses), and the treatment of acute trauma. The candidate will serve on the Specialty Trainee Grade of the
3 unit’s on-call rota. They will be placed into a structured programme of elective work for the initial 6 months, Pending educational and other progress assessments, they would then finish their term with more flexible allocation to appropriate theatre and clinic/MDT sessions appropriate to their subspecialty development. Mechanisms are in place to match trainee’s experience and educational requirements to training provision.
It is expected that the successful candidate(s) will progress their clinical competencies, and portfolio, and develop as an independent reconstructive surgeon.
The hours of duty of this post are the standard working week (40 hours).

Research Opportunities:
Close links exist with the Bio-engineering Unit in Strathclyde University, and with various groups in the University of Glasgow (e.g. Centre for Cell
Engineering, Beatson Oncology Centre). A microsurgery lab is available inhouse, as are teaching simulations.

Educational Opportunities:
Weekly consultant led teaching sessions, and monthly audit should be attended. Further attendance at national teaching, or courses run by the unit will be supported where possible.
Flap courses run twice per year. Microsurgery courses run 4 times per year.
The successful candidate will be provided with structured training for the initial phase of appointment (3-6 months), followed by preferential access to the Unit’s full range of microsurgical activities.
Study leave within the United Kingdom will be in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service
