DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS
PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE AFTER AORTO-BIFEMORAL BYPASS
ACTIVITY
-No driving or heavy lifting.
-You may ambulate as tolerated.
DIET
-Resume your pre-hospitalization diet.
MEDICATIONS
-Resume all pre-hospitalization medications unless otherwise instructed.
-Take one aspirin, Ecotrin or Ascriptin every day (Adult-strength – 325mg).
-Use painkillers as prescribed and as needed. Take with food to decrease stomach upset.
-Take over the counter stool softner/laxative as needed.
DRESSINGS
-You may leave your incision open to air. If there is any drainage from the incision, you
should cover it with a 4x4 gauze after cleaning the incision with Hydrogen
Peroxide.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
-You may shower 24 hrs after discharge from the hospital. No tub bathing.
-Clean any staples in your incision with Hydrogen Peroxide once a day.
-Call the office for temperature greater than 101 or significant wound problems.
-If you develop excessive drainage, opened incisions, severe pain in your legs or other
problems, call the office.
-We will see you in the office in 1-2 weeks. If you do not have an appointment, please
call the office today.
-For any other questions or problems, please call us at the appropriate office number
listed below.
NOTE: Your surgery involved the use of a prosthetic graft. This graft has increased risk
of infection when you have any type of invasive procedure (such as dental work, teeth
cleaning, colonoscopy, angiography, cystoscopy and all type of surgery.) When you are
schedule for an invasive procedure, you should inform the physician performing the
procedure that you have a prosthetic graft and need antibiotics to prevent infection. Any
questions concerning this should be directed to our office.
