The establishment consists of 35 personnel headed by the General Manager, G. Somashekhara Rao. The management comprises a team of professional directors headed by Ashok Pai. Manipal Co-operative Bank conducted an extensive evaluation of core banking solutions available in the country. The bank replaced its legacy application system, which was written in COBOL and standardized on Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 operating system, Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000, and Processware’s BankSoft™, for branch automation. Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 are both part of Microsoft Windows Server System™ integrated server software. G. Somashekara Rao, General Manager, Manipal Co-operative Bank Ltd. Manipal Co-operative Bank caters to the middle- and lower-income groups and students studying in professional colleges at Manipal. A single-branch bank, Manipal Cooperative Bank has deposits of U.S.$270 million/Rs 12197.80 lakh and a working capital of U.S.$81 million/3692.91 lakh. Manipal Co-operative Bank was facing competition from nationalized and foreign banks, which had begun to offer new technology-based services with longer working hours. It was also a challenge for the bank to get a clear assessment of its Nonperforming Assets (NPAs). To be successful, it needed to retain its existing customers, add new revenue streams, and reduce costs. The bank also wanted to reduce the time and cost of branch operations, such as ledger work, closing of books on the same day, generating reports required by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and reconciling of reports. The bank required a technology framework solution that would help it grow and compete in the new economy. Keeping an eye on the competition, the bank decided to revamp its existing infrastructure to incorporate enhanced services to its customers. Commenting on the choice of the BankSoft solution, G. Somashekhara Rao, General Manager of Manipal Co-operative Bank says, “The BankSoft solution has provided us with the opportunity to automate and integrate our day-to-day business processes. The solution enables us to efficiently connect with our existing customers, partners, and employees.” From planning to implementation, Manipal Co-Operative Bank worked with Processware Systems, a Microsoft Certified Partner. BankSoft uses Microsoft software effectively, thus making customization an easy process. The customization was completed within two months. The new solution is being used at a single location and has 35 concurrent users. Other than providing a core banking solution, Processware has been selected as the preferred technology consultant, to accommodate the prevailing and future requirements of the bank. Rao remarks, “Processware’s BankSoft solution on the Microsoft platform generates all the statutory reports, especially periodical financial statements which are sent to the Reserve Bank of India. In fact, during the RBI audit in November 2004, the solution was highly appreciated by the RBI audit officials.” Using SQL Server 2000 as the server, Processware’s BankSoft solution has provided Manipal Co-operative Bank all the necessary modules for complete branch automation. BankSoft on SQL Server 2000 Number of months to implement 2 Reduced Work Hours Nearly 40% Transactions handled per day 300 It has enabled the bank to get a complete view of its comprehensive audit log and generate statutory reports such as Form 1 and Form 9. Janardhan Bhat, Systems Officer of Manipal Co-operative Bank says, “The BankSoft solution on the Microsoft platform has offered us an end-to-end solution to meet our immediate business objectives. It also sets the foundation for additional value-added services such as support for multiple delivery channels including Internet, PDAs, touchscreen kiosks, mobile phones, and ATMs. We plan to offer these facilities to our customers in the near future.” Benefits The bank has made impressive progress and has grown from strength to strength since the implementation of BankSoft. It has boosted easier integration within existing systems at Manipal Co-Operative Bank. Improved Performance BankSoft has enabled Manipal Co-operative Bank to eliminate unnecessary complex infrastructures, redesign inefficient processes, and integrate people, processes, and information. This has led to a secure network and a superior functioning of the bank’s operations. Increased Efficiency Manipal Co-Operative Bank faced a shortage of space. Therefore, keeping documents was becoming an onerous process. BankSoft solution has digitized the data, thereby removing the need for physical space. The vouchers are first scanned and indexed. The voucher images are then saved in date order to facilitate easy reference. This enables the viewing of all transactions pertaining to a specific date at the click of a button. This has been accomplished using minimum personnel and has resulted in increased employee efficiency. Decreased Operational Expenses From the handling of new accounts, enrollment, loan origination, compliance filings, and performance management, BankSoft enhances customer service with a superior performance. Operational expenses have also decreased by the reduced manhours. Operational Efficiency With the implementation of the BankSoft solution, Manipal Co-Operative Bank is able to close its books on the same day, generate statutory reports required by RBI, and provide a clear view of the NPAs at any given time. Identifying Nonperforming Assets A critical benefit has been the availability of unified data on the bank’s NPAs. The bank is now able to generate reports by names and addresses, for example, thereby making it easier to track customers who have been defaulting on payments. Further, with a unified view of its finances, the bank is able to make better investment decisions. Customer Care “Our main priority is to improve the value we provide to our customers. The BankSoft solution has become a primary tool for helping us serve our customers better and faster,” says Rao.
