COURSE TITLE: 9TH GRADE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM COURSE DESCRIPTION Secondary physical Education continues the emphasis on health-related fitness and developing the skills and habits necessary for a lifetime of activity. This program includes skill development and the application of rules and strategies of complex difficulty in at least three of the following different movement forms: (1) health-related fitness activities (cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition), (2) aerobic exercise, (3) team sports, (4) individual and dual sports, (5) gymnastics, (6) outdoor pursuits, (7) self-defense, (8) aquatics, (9) dance, (10) recreational games. Ongoing assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations. COURSE OBJECTIVES Demonstrate the ability to use and appreciate activity-specific skills. Exhibit the ability to synthesize and perform creative rhythmic movement patterns with increasing degrees of difficulty. Develop outdoor and lifelong leisure pursuits. Synthesize previously learned strategies into advanced game strategies. Identify available community resources that promote an active lifestyle. Identify physical activities that contribute to the improvement of specific fitness components. Identify and evaluate personal physiological response to exercise. Demonstrate safe and appropriate use and care of equipment and facilities. Understand benefits of physical education on social and emotional well-being. Develop strategies for inclusion of others in physical activity. Identify positive aspects of participation in several different physical activities.
