2. GOAL AND TASKS OF THE STUDIED SUBJECT
Pediatric infectious diseases as a study discipline:
а) is included as a module 4 into the study program in Pediatrics for 5th year.
б) is based on the knowledge received by the students during learning
medical biology, normal nad pathological physiology, normal and pathological
anatomy, histology, pharmacology, pediatric propedeutics and is integrated with
these subjects;
в) creates basis for the students for forming skills and knowledge which are
considered as final goals of learning pediatrics as a separate subject and can be
used by the students at learning pediatrics, pediatric infectious diseases and other
clinical subjects at the 6th year and during professional activity.
Final goals of the studied subject «Pediatric infectious diseases» are based
on the ground of learning goals, which are pointed in educational-professional
program (EPP) and are described as the following:
1. To demonstrate the mastering of moral and deontological principles of a
medical specialist and principles of specialty subordination in pediatrics.
2. To be able to make the preliminary diagnosis of the most common infectious
diseases in children age.
3. To have the ability to point out ethiological and pathogenetic factors of the
most common infectious diseases of children.
4. To be able to differenciate the particularities of the clinical course of the
most common infectious diseases of children.
5. To possess the skills to delineate main directions of the treatment of the
most common infectious diseases of children of different age.
6. To be able to point out prophylactic and anti-epidemic activities regarding
the most common infectious diseases of children.
Types of studying activity of the students according to the studying plan are
the following: а) lectures; b) practical classes; c) self-performed work of the
students.
Lectures. The priority is given to problematic, rewiev and conceptualanalytic lectures. The lecture becomes the process, during which the students
develop knowledge, acquire motivation component and generally oriented stage of
scientific knowledge possession. The role of lectures in the management of selfperformed work of the students is stressed.
Practical classes. According to the credit-module system of organization of
the study process, the practical classes are performed in the regime of rotation of
modules of clinical subject. The length of one practical class is not less than 4
hours. According the method of organization, they are clinical, pointed to the
control of theoretical knowledge mastering and practical skills forming, as well as
ability to analyse and use the acquired knowledge for practical tasks solution,
which includes:
- Gatherin of anamnesis;
- Physical examination of the sick child;
5
- Planning of the investigation of the diseased child;
- Interpretation of the laboratory data and instrumental investigations;
- Performance of differential diagnosis of the most common diseases of pediatric
age at their typical course;
- Making the preliminary clinical diagnosis;
- Making therapeutical decision;
- Prescription of the therapeutical diet;
- Providing the urgent medical help;
- Solution of situational tasks;
- Mastering of practical skills on the dolls and at the bed of the sick child;
- Filling in medical documentation.
The mastering of the subjcts is controlled at practical classes according to
concrete goals: ability to point out ethiologiacl and pathogenetic factors of the
diseases of pediatric age, to classify and analyse the typical clinical picture, to
make the plan of investigation and to analyse the laboratory and instrumental data
at typical course of the disease, to demonstrate possession of principles of therapy,
rehabilitaion and prophylaxis of the diseases, to make the diagnosis and to provide
the urgent medical help at main urgent conditions, to perform differential diagnosis
and to make preliminary diagnosis at typical course of the disease, to perform
evaluation of the prognosis of the disease, to demonstrate possession of moral and
deontological principles of the medical specialist and principles of specialty
subordination in pediatrics.
The list of the criteria of diagnosis and management of infectious diseases in
children is pointed out according the appropriate protocols of the specialty
«Pediatric infectious diseases» (Regulation of Health Care Ministry of Ukraine
#354 «Protocols of diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in children»
from 09.07.2004).
Self-perfromed work of the students. It is one of the main organizational
forms of study, which is described by the study plan and is performed by the
student him/herself beyond auditory classes. Possible kinds of self-performed work
of the students include: preparation for practical classes and studying of the
subjects which are provided only for self-study of the students, search and study of
additional literature, creation of the algorhythms, structural-logical schemes,
writing the researches, annotations, reports for practical studies, being on duty in
the clinics beyond classes. Organization of the self-performed work in departments
of infectious hospital is provided by the stuff of the department.
Individual studies. It is the form of organization of the study with the goal
of making the knowledge obtained during the study more profound, generalized
and strong, as well as usage of this knowledge in the practice, that is, individual
study and research tasks. As required, individual studies with criteria of evaluation
is the writing of study case history according to the results of curation of the
patients.
Final control. Evaluation of the mastering of the module is performed after
its completion at the final module control classes.
6
Evaluation of the student’s performance at the subject. It is according to
the rating and is made on a multiple-point scale with consideration of the marks of
separate content modules.

9. EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY OF THE
STUDENTS
The forms of the control and the system of evaluation are performed
according to requirements of the discipline program and the new redaction
«Instructions for evaluation of the studying activity of the students at
implementation of credit-module system of educartional process organization»,
approved by Health Care Ministry of Ukraine 21.01.2008 № 08.01-22/65.
9.1. PRACTICAL CLASSES
9.1.1. Intermediate control
Intermediate control is perfromed at each practical class according to concrete
goals of every subject. At studying every subject of the module during the
intermediate studying activity the student obtains marks according to 4- points
traditional scale, which are later converted into points.
Traditional mark «5» is appropriate for maximal amount of points, which can
be obtained by the student at studying at practical classes, that is, 8 points. Marks
«4» and «3» are appropriate for 80% and 60% from maximal marks in points, that
is, 6 and 5 points accordingly. The students who were present at classes and
received mark «2», obtain minimal amount of points, which is appropriate for 30%
from anout of credits of traditional mark «3», that is, 2 points.
Maximal amout of credits which can be obtained by the student at studyin the
module 4, is 120. It is the result of multiplication of amount of points appropriate
to the mark «5», and the amount of subjects in the module, with additioning the
points for individual self-performed work provided by the program.
Minimal amount of credits which can be obtained during studying the module
is calculated by the multiplication of amount of credits appropriate for mark «3»,
and amount of subjects in the module.
As the program provides required individual self-performed work of the
students at patient follow-up and writing of the case history, the minimal mark also
includes amount of credits appropriate for the mark «3» for the given work.
The credits for individual work are added to the sum of credits obtained by the
student during the intermediate studying activity. Proof of the case histore is
perfrmed during the time for self-performed work of the students at the
department.
Students can work out the missed classes or improve their marks during the
time of consultations of the teacher (individual work with the students) not more
than 3 times during the module, that is, to obtain amnout of credits not less than
minimal, to be admitted to the final module control.
9.1.2. Criteria of evaluation
Practical classes in pediatric infectious diseases are structured and provide
complex evaluation in points of all the kinds of studying activity (studying tasks),
which are performed by the students during practical classes.
Traditional marks, which are converted into points, are obtained by the
student at practical classes at the following conditions:
15
Mark «5» - if the student performed correctly not less than 90% of the
studying tasks (sum of points for all kinds of work is 13-15 points)
Mark «4» - if the student performed correctly not less than 80% of the
studying tasks (sum of points for all kinds of work is 10-12 points)
Mark «3» - if the student performed correctly not less than 60% of the
studying tasks (sum of points for all kinds of work is 9 points)
Mark «2» - if the student performed correctly not less than 60% of the
studying tasks (sum of points for all kinds of work is 0-8 points).
The mark is given by the teacher in the «Book of presence and performance of
the students» (form НІ І-і) after testing the individual tasks and is told to the
students at the next classes.

9.1.3. Reevaluation of unsatisfactory mark
Student can only improve the mark «2». Intermediate marks «3» or «4» can
not be reevaluated. The student is obliged to improve «2», if the sum of credits of
current credits does not reach the minimal for allowing to take the final module
control. The student is not obliged to improve the current «2» in case if the sum of
credits within the module is higher than the minimal for allowing to take the final
module control, but has the right to improve «2» and in case if minimal amount of
credits is reached. Reevaluation is done by the teacher on duty only after classes
according to the schedule of consultations, which is proscribed by studying
department. Number of reevaluations of intermediate «2» is not retricted. The
student has the right to reevaluate intermediate «2» durin the whole period of the
study of the subject, but not later than the additional term, proscribed by studying
department of DSMA. During one consultation the student can improve only one
intermediate «2».
9.2.INDIVIDUAL SELF-PERFORMED WORK
9.2.1. General information
Evaluation of self-performed work of the students for preparation for
practical classes is performed during the intermediate control of the subject at
appropriate classes.
Evaluation of the learned subjects which are supposed only for selfperformed work and are not included into auditory classes, is controlled during
final module control.
16
Evaluation of the case history as a required individual work of the student is
performed during its discussion with the teacher during the individual work of the
teacher with the student.
9.2.2. Criteria of the marks
Mark «5» is given if the student has performed complete clinical investigation
of the sick child, has described its results, evaluated correctly general condition of
the patient, clinical changes of organs and systems, results of laboratory or
functional methods of investigation, has correctly made clinical diagnosis
according to the classification of the diseases, has prescribed complete and correct
treatment, has pointed out correct prognosis of the disease and methods of its
prophylaxis.
Mark «4» is given if the student has performed complete clinical investigation
of the sick child, but made some impreciseness in description and evaluation of the
results of investigation, has correctly but not completely made clinical diagnosis
and has prescribed incomplete treatment.
Mark «3» is given if the student has made some mistakes in the analysis of the
condition, of results of clinical and laboratory evaluation of the child, in provement
of the diagnosis, in prescription of the treatment of pointing out the prognosis of
the disease.
Mark «2» is given if the student has made bad mistakes in the analysis of the
condition, of results of clinical and laboratory evaluation of the child, has
incorrectly made the diagnosis, has prescribed incorrect treatment.

9.3. FINAL MODULE CONTROL
9.3.1. General information
It is performed after completing the study of all the subjects of the module at
the last classes of the module.
The students who completed all the kinds of work required by the studying
program and who obtained amount of points not less than minimal during the study
of the module, are allowed to pass final control.
The forms of the performance of final module control are standartized and
include the control of theoretical and practical skills.
Maximal amount of points of the final module control is 80.
The final module control is considered performed if the student acquired not
less than 50 points.
17
The control cal theoretical and practical skills of the students during the final
module control, which is performed during 4 academical hours, is performed
according to the following plan:
Test control – 30 tests, performed during 30 min. Maximal amount of points
is 30 (1 points for 1 correct responce).
Performance by the students of the practical skills at the bedside (evaluation
of the general condition of the child, objective evaluation and clinical findings of
organs and systems, making preliminary diagnosis, prescription of the treatment,
providing of urgent help, etc.) – 90 min. Maximal amount of credits is 30
Solution of the complex structured situational task, which includes
intrepretation of clinical and instrumental data, making preliminary clinical
diagnosis, prescription of therapeutic management, prescription of the treatment
and checking the results at the presence of the student is 60 min. The maximal
amount of points is 20.
9.3.1. Reevaluation of final module control
Reasons for not to reevaluate the module control:
а) the student has not obtained the minimal amount of points for intermediate
activities and is not allowed to take the final module control;
б) the student has passed the final module control but obtained less than 50
points;
в) the student has missed and not passed classes and (or) lectures;
г) the student did not come for the final module control
Reevaluation of the final module control is perfromed not more than twice.
The first reevaluation of the final module control is performed by a commettee
within 3 weeks after the planned control, but not later than the additional term. The
second (and the last) reevaluation of the final module control is performed by a
commettee after termination of the course «Pediatric infectious diseases, V year»
according to the schedule of the studying process.
Reevaluation is performed on the day appointed by the study department of
DSMA.
9.4. EVALUATION OF THE SUBJECT
The mark for «Pediatric infectious diseases, VІ year» is only given to the
students who are completed all the moduls of the subject.
The mark for the subject is given as a mean of the marks for the modules
which are included into the subject.
Additional encouraging points, according to the decision of the Scientific
Council, are added to the subject points for the students who have scientific
publications (15 points) or who have possessed prises at student scientificpractical conferences (15 points) or olimpiads on the subject «Pediatrics» among
high schools of Uraine, etc.
The objectivity of the evaluation of study activity of the students must be
tested by statistical methods (correlation coefficient between current marks and
results of final module control).
18
Convertion of the amount of points for the subject into marks of ECTS scales
and 4-point (traditional) is performed by the following method:

Ranging of the marks «А», «В», «С», «D», «Е» is performed for the
students of the given course, who study one specialty and have successuly
completed studying the subject.
Marks «FX, F» are given to the students who have not completed at least
one module of the subject after its finishing.
Mark «FX» is given to the students who obtained the minimal amount of
points for intermediate study activities but who have not passed the final module
control. This category of the students has right to reevaluate the final module
control according to the approved schedule during vacations within two weeks
after competion of the year. The repeated reevaluation of the final module control
is allowed not more than twice.
Mark «F» is given to the students who attended all the classes of the module
but who did not obtained the minimal amount of points for current study subject
and are not allowed to pass the final module control. This category of the students
has rights to study the module the second time.
Aftre permission of the prorector of study department, student is allowed to
improve the mark for the subject by reevaluation of the final module control (not
more than three times during all the period of studies).
The students who sudy the same subject, with considering all the amount of
points for the subject, are distributed for ECTS scale by the following way:
