Pediatric Infectious Disease Elective (University of Oklahoma College of Medicine-Tulsa) Course Director: Duration: Location: B. Bhushan Sharma, M.D., F.A.A.P One month Out-patient: Pediatric Clinic In-patient: St. Francis Hospital St. John Medical Center Hillcrest Medical Center Objectives: 1. To become proficient in the management of infectious diseases of children that a general pediatrician will encounter in his or her practice. 2. To learn the proper use of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. 3. To correctly answer most questions relating to Pediatric Infectious Diseases on the American Board of Pediatrics examination. 4. To become proficient in the use of computers to access medical information. 5. To Conduct a research study (optional) Course Description: The resident will perform the following duties: 1. Examine all patients daily on the Pediatric ID In-patient Service, and discuss their management first with Dr. Sharma and then with the primary care physicians, resident physicians and medical students involved with those cases. 2. Examine all patients in the Pediatric ID clinic with Dr. Sharma. 3. Discuss at least one infectious disease topic daily with Dr. Sharma. 4. Answer multiple choice questions relating too infectious diseases. 5. Visit the Microbiology Laboratory at St. Francis Hospital with Dr. Sharma. 6. Teach junior residents and medical students involved in the care of Pediatric ID Service patients. 7. Dictate consultation notes and write progress notes in a timely manner. 8. Learn how to use the Internet, and the computers at the library at St. Francis Hospital and Schusterman Center to access medical information. 9. Conduct a research study (optional) Study 1. 2. 3. Material: Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics Red Book Selected journal articles Grading: Dr. Sharma will fill out the resident evaluation form at the end of the rotation. The residents will be judged for attitude and interpersonal skills, clinical skills, quality of medical records, medical knowledge and eagerness to learn. Miscellaneous Information: Get in touch with Dr. Sharma one day before the rotation starts to find out where to meet on the first day. If your rotation starts on a Monday, call Dr. Sharma at home on the weekend. Make a list of 20 infectious disease topics that you would like to discuss with Dr. Sharma during the rotation, and bring it with you on the first day of rotation. The success of this rotation depends on the motivation of the resident. The harder a resident works, the more he or she will get out of this rotation. I consider all residents to be mature and responsible adults, and my intention is for them to seek knowledge on their own. I will be a facilitator in the learning process. Residents are expected to attend all Pediatric Grand Rounds, Academic Afternoon lectures and Board Review lectures. Residents are expected to wear appropriate attire. T-shirts, shorts, sneakers, or surgical scrubs are not to be worn on this rotation.
